Communications Manager, Pokémon GO

Niantic’s Communications team is seeking a communications manager for Pokémon GO, focusing on Japan.

We're looking for an expert Communications Manager to lead our communication strategy for Pokémon GO in Japan, and to support communications for the game in APAC. You'll play a pivotal role in growing the game's presence and success both within Japan and beyond.

You should have a passion for building relationships with press and creators the ability to distill information and connect with a wide range of audiences. You should be adept at developing a narrative and conveying messaging that brings a brand's story to life.

Responsibilities

  • Creative Leadership: Work cross functionally with our product and marketing teams to tell the story and promise of Pokémon GO to millions of trainers.
  • Media Relations: Cultivate and strengthen relationships with Japanese media outlets. Develop compelling messaging and efficiently handle press inquiries.
  • Influencer Relations: Build relationships with Pokémon GO content creators. Respond to inquiries, keeping them informed and generate content briefs. Identify new influencers to work with.
  • Press Engagement Leadership: Plan and lead press events, such as roundtables and conferences, to boost Pokémon GO's visibility and understanding among key media and influencers.
  • Press Material Development: Work collaboratively with the Global Communications team and other teams across the company to create impactful media materials. Ensure alignment with our overarching communication and marketing strategies.
  • Travel: staff live events and support press, influencers, executives and partners.
  • Industry Engagement: Immerse yourself in Pokémon GO and the broader mobile games industry. Stay abreast of trends, and provide insights and process recommendations to drive the Pokémon GO business forward.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members and business partners, including regular and reliable attendance and participation in meetings.
  • Required in-office 3 days a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Qualifications

  • Communications Expertise: 6+ years and a proven track record implementing consumer-facing PR and/or influencer campaigns in the video game, entertainment or tech sectors. Ability to support both large cross-functional marketing and communications campaigns as well as respond to and quickly address reactive issues.
  • Creative Chops: Approaches storytelling opportunities with curiosity and a creative perspective, crafting communications that break through.
  • Writing and Organizational Skills: Strong writing skills, and the ability to translate detailed features and updates into digestible and attention-grabbing announcements.
  • Passion: A strong enthusiasm for video games, especially real-world mobile games and Pokémon GO.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced hybrid environment and handle stress appropriately. Ability to solve problems and be sufficiently adaptable to handle dynamic situations with little advance notice.
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams with the ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal communications, including synchronous interactions with others.
  • Business English Proficiency: Fluent English skills for effective collaboration with international teams and offices.
