(Sr) Research Associate / Data Engineer, Data Science

New York City, New York

Nilo Therapeutics is an early-stage biotech company developing groundbreaking therapies for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Our experienced team brings together diverse interdisciplinary expertise to modulate immune responses via activation of neural circuits. United by our passion for discovering and translating novel biology, we are dedicated to advancing human health through transformative science.

We are backed by The Column Group, Lux, and DCVC Bio.

Position

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Research Associate / Data Engineer to join our Data Science Team and support data management, analysis, and integration across our discovery platform. In this role, you’ll help build and maintain the data backbone of our research pipeline—from receiving and organizing CRO assay outputs to preparing datasets for analysis, visualization, and ingestion into our electronic lab notebook (ELN) and cloud infrastructure. You will also assist various other efforts of the Data Science Team, including advising on statistical aspects of experimental design, defining workflows (e.g., RNA/DNA-seq, etc.), performing analysis (Differential Expression, scRNA-seq, etc.), and web-app development for data reporting and visualization. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working closely with scientists across disciplines, ensuring smooth and high-quality data flow, and contributing directly to experimental decision-making.

At Nilo Therapeutics, we are a dynamic start-up at the forefront of biotech innovation, driven to discover novel biology and develop new drugs. We seek team members who are inspired by our mission and thrive in a collaborative, rigorous, and entrepreneurial environment. Ideal candidates are self-motivated, proactive problem solvers, excited to build and grow the company alongside a world-class team. If you are comfortable with managing multiple projects and possess a resourceful, can-do attitude, we would love to hear from you. Join us and contribute to our mission of advancing innovative therapies at the intersection of neuroscience and immunology.

What you’ll do:

  • Work across a wide range of scientific datasets—multi-assay screens, sequencing-derived tables, imaging outputs, and vendor-specific instrument exports—organizing, standardizing, and automating data flows so they can be reliably used by downstream teams
  • Build and maintain data pipelines, APIs, and internal tools that streamline ingestion, QC, annotation, and storage of experimental data, ensuring data integrity throughout
  • Collaborate with scientists, project teams, and external CROs to clarify experimental context, define data templates, and manage data entry efforts — ensuring that data structures align with biological intent and that formatting and schema issues are resolved for consistent data quality
  • Manage cloud-based data storage and database organization, helping maintain clear versioning, documentation, and discoverability
  • Use Python to clean, validate, and explore new datasets, generating basic analyses or sanity checks that help guide downstream decisions
  • Design, build, and maintain custom web-applications to perform automated analysis and/or report and visualize results
  • Present findings in internal meetings, project teams, and external meetings as appropriate

Key Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in bioinformatics, data science, data engineering, or a related discipline with 0-2 years of post-graduate experience
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in data management
  • Experience working with structured data (Excel, CSV, JSON, YAML, relational databases) as well as semi-structured and unstructured data (text, network graphs)
  • Excellent analytical and programming skills, with expertise in Python and familiarity with related tools (e.g., R, Bash/CLI, Docker)
  • Familiarity with API development frameworks (e.g., REST)
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms and services — especially instances, storage, and databases
  • Experience with a broad range of bioinformatic tools and methods, including sequencing QC and analysis workflows (and their associated datatypes such as FASTQ), as well as familiarity with workflow orchestration concepts for building reproducible pipelines
  • Interest or experience in developing simple web applications
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills

We offer a competitive compensation package that includes a range of benefits designed to support the well-being and professional growth of our team members.

The base compensation range for this position is $89K - $115K.
