Forward Deployed Engineer

New York City, NY, USA

About Nira Energy

  • Nira's mission is to help convert the US power grid to be 100% fossil-free.
  • We are profitable!
  • Nira is a software platform that helps renewable energy developers find the cheapest points on the grid to connect.
  • We focus on estimating the cost to interconnect with the electrical grid (aka the Interconnection Process). Depending on where developers connect, they may be on the hook to pay millions of dollars to upgrade power lines, substations etc.

As our first Forward Deployed Engineer, your role is to help launch Nira’s new business line with the Independent System Operators (ISOs). You’ll work directly with the founders every day. This is the perfect role for aspiring founders; you’ll learn critical skills by being responsible for going from zero to one at each ISO. And on top of that, you get to play a key role in mitigating the climate crisis.

If you’ve worked as an FDE at Palantir, this is the same role (our CTO is ex-Palantir). As a FDE, you are responsible for the software at a particular ISO. You’ll work hand-in-hand with a Transmission Planning Engineer (TPE) and an Echo (Deployment Strategist). You’ll get to travel across the country to embed directly with the ISO users. If you love talking to users, fixing their problems with software, and shipping to production - all in a week - this is the role for you.

You’ll work side by side with Nira’s domain experts (TPEs) to transform how the grid is built at the ISOs. ISOs are the organizations that plan our electrical grid and they are a critical bottleneck in the energy transition. Making the ISOs more efficient directly accelerates decarbonization of our power grid.

About you:

  1. Loves talking to users and fixing their problems. Your favorite thing at your job is seeing software you’ve built make a customer’s life easier.
  2. Strong coder with 2+ years of experience as a software engineer (FDE experience a plus)
  3. Excitement about travel for on-site client work.
  4. Mission-oriented and focused on working on climate
  5. Excited about nerding out with Nira’s domain experts (Transmission Planning Engineers) to learn about how the power grid is built and maintained.
  6. Operate well in ambiguity and able to take ownership over large pieces of work
  7. Capable of rolling with the punches; plans change at a growing startup

Compensation:
190-210k, equity
