Location: Fully remote, with a preference for candidates within commuting distance to NFF’s New York office. Fully remote locations, including Boston, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Philadelphia will also be considered.

About the Opportunity:

NFF’s Consulting team works with nonprofit organizations, funders, coalitions, networks and other mission-driven partners to address issues of finance within the nonprofit system. The team engages most often with cohorts of nonprofit leaders who are at an inflection point in their organization’s journey and experiencing tremendous change and systemic inequities. We support these leaders by being a thought partner, providing advice on ways to build financial strength, and informing decision-making through analysis. We believe we can only succeed when recognizing and complementing the organization’s unique strengths, aspirations, and values.

We provide customized consulting to thousands of organizations throughout the country. In 2023, NFF provided one-on-one support to over 208 organizations, with the goal of helping to build their capacity and sustainability as they work to create a more just and vibrant society.

NFF is seeking a Manager, Consulting who will work both independently and collaboratively to implement initiatives, deliver workshops and webinars, and engage with partners. This role will lead our core client consulting engagements, present NFF’s core messages through workshops and webinars, lead standard initiatives, build and hold relationships with external partners, and support complex initiatives that require thoughtful customization. The Consulting department is a close-working national team that values growth and feedback. Managers will be part of a team where all team members support and mentor their colleagues in program delivery, financial analysis, and initiative management. 

The position can be based remotely, with a preference for candidates near our New York, Philadelphia, or Boston offices. Occasional travel may be required for local/national conferences, all-staff meetings and department retreats. There is potential for up to 30% travel, which will consist of client visits, occasional out-of-town site visits, and local/national conferences.

The Manager, Consulting will report to the Senior Director, Consulting who is based in California.

 

What you’ll do: 

Support with the design and delivery of new and innovative client work 

  • Facilitate in-person, remote, virtual meetings, and dialogues with nonprofit leaders that both identify and communicate key findings and recommendations for addressing core strategic and financial issues. 
  • Develop presentations for clients that both identify and communicate key findings and recommendations for addressing core strategic and financial issues. 
  • Collaborate with other departments (Community Engagement, Loan Origination, Finance, Marketing & Communications, and Learning & Impact) in designing workplans and project goals. 
  • Lead work with clients to identify and frame key financial, strategic, and organizational issues. 

Conduct in-depth financial analyses, organizational assessments, and sector research 

  • Utilize NFF’s proprietary Analysis Engine for multi-year historic financial analysis of clients and cohorts; interpret complex financial information from audits and other sources to accurately reflect unrestricted operating results, liquidity, and availability. 
  • Build custom financial models that provide the data to test options and scenarios.  
  • Synthesize data and integrate findings into clear, accessible materials; write and present reports that outline key findings, options, opportunities, risks, scenarios, and recommendations. 

Contribute to sustaining and optimizing the consulting infrastructure 

  • Proactively follow up and help develop analyses and materials for meetings and manage follow up of items resulting from meetings. 
  • Support the evolution of Consulting models, tools, services, and content including maintaining the consulting resources on the NFF Knowledge Wiki Platform.   
  • Lead and manage meetings, agendas, notes, feedback, and meeting schedules.  
  • Work closely with and collaborate with key stakeholders both internal and external to monitor program quality and serve the organizational mission and aspirations for core constituents. 
  • Liaise closely with NFF partners to support the design of communications tools, including messaging and outreach efforts to promote and brand NFF’s mission and services to the community.  

Inform and support department growth activities 

  • Collect and analyze data via meetings, on-site involvement, and research; use relevant data to inform business decisions and inform plans to achieve outreach and engagement strategies that solicit and strengthen community engagement at NFF. 
  • Provide effective support, suggestions, and editing on drafting of high-quality deliverables, including concept papers, presentations, proposal submissions and other development documents.  
  • Communicate insights and actionable recommendations for concept notes, proposals, and reports to the Development department. 
  • Gather and elevate trends, perspectives, learnings through dialogue, networking, and connections to effectively advance knowledge of community aspirations and goals. 

 

Who you are: 

  • You have a minimum of 5 years of professional work experience, preferably in nonprofit management, philanthropy, government, consulting and/or financial services.  
  • You possess knowledge in nonprofit accounting, finance, and excel-based financial model building 
  • You have strong relationship-building approach with the ability to center the needs of clients and communities  
  • You possess strong project management skills with demonstrated success managing multiple projects 
  • You are a strategic thinker; you combine strategy and innovation to successfully design and implement processes, systems and policies that support the organization's overall vision and growth   
  • You have strong analytical skills and can present complex analytics in an accessible manner 
  • You maintain a high level of integrity and can handle sensitive information in a confidential manner  
  • You have exceptional and proactive communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills 
  • You have experience facilitating adult learning sessions, such as webinars and presentations 
  • You enjoy collaborating with team members who are working together to re-envision how we combine investments and financial expertise to drive change in communities 
  • You promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.  
  • You are flexible, adaptable, and willing to pivot on short notice to meet the organization’s needs 
  • You possess a commitment to continuous improvement and demonstrate a growth mindset 
  • You embody NFF’s mission, core values and commitment to equity 

 

Compensation: 

At NFF, we are invested in discussing the depth and breadth of each candidate’s background and experience during the interview process and using that information to determine the best offer while considering internal pay equity. The salary range for this position is $93,000 - $99,500. If provided an offer, NFF will determine salary compensation based on relevant skills and years of experience. NFF also takes into consideration internal equity in setting salary bands for each role. NFF provides an attractive benefits package that currently includes up to 18 paid holidays, 3 floating holidays, unlimited vacation time off, health insurance with NFF funded health reimbursement account on medical plan, and employer contributions toward retirement plan. In addition, NFF provides flexibility to work remotely and access to a “work from home” fund, and flexible spending accounts including medical, commuter, and childcare benefits.
