Engineering Manager, Deployment and Observability Infrastructure
About Us:
We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.
We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.
Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays).
About The Role:
Millions of people use Notion — and this number is increasing every day. That means millions of people trust us to deliver a fast, reliable, and secure experience, and we value this more than anything. Your team is responsible for providing the deployment and observability infrastructure for Notinos to continuously ship their changes to Notion users and monitor reliability. Your job starts after engineers merge their changes into main. The continuous delivery system your team provides picks those changes and deploy gradually. The observability stack your team maintains gives feedback to engineers how their changes behave in production. You are at the heart of Notion's reliability.
What You'll Achieve:
- You'll build and manage a diverse and inclusive team of engineers building deployment infrastructure and observability platform of Notion engineering. You'll create a healthy environment in your team that embodies Notion's values.
- You'll recruit, coach, and develop engineers; you'll ensure engineers are regularly receiving feedback and are making progress on personal and professional goals.
- You'll collaborate closely with engineering teams to provide best in class deployment and observability experience. Your team owns mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to recover (MTTR) SLOs for Notion.
- You will make important decisions for Notion regarding its observability and monitoring stack. You will affect directly how incidents are responded.
- You'll facilitate planning—the prioritization, sequencing, and staffing of work—for your team.
- You'll be responsible for maintaining a high-quality bar for everything your team ships.
- You'll work with the rest of the Engineering team to shape how Notion's engineering organization works—you'll help develop our technical practices, recruiting and onboarding strategy, planning and prioritization process, and more.
Skills You'll Need to Bring:
- You have 2+ years of experience managing engineering teams with a record of shipping high-quality outcomes in a fast-paced environment.
- You have a sufficiently deep background in the observability, reliability and/or deployment infrastructure.
- You are passionate about improving the engineering experience and infrastructure reliability.
- You have built, or are committed to building, diverse and inclusive teams.
- You create team environments that are at once collaborative, empowering, supportive, and challenging—ones where engineers do their best work.
- You value empathetic and direct communication enabling you to give and receive feedback effectively and create alignment cross-functionally or cross-teams.
- You have a high tolerance for ambiguity and change. You enjoy jumping into whatever areas need attention and learning as you go.
Bonus Points:
- You worked closely with the infrastructure teams, solved scalability challenges.
- You have managed engineering teams at startups before, particularly during periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
- You have experience rolling out engineering and management practices and processes—e.g., code review, performance reviews, and levels and ladders—where they didn't exist before.
- You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.
We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.
