Engineering Manager, Web Infrastructure
About Us:
We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.
We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like OpenAI, Toyota, Figma, Ramp, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.
Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).
About The Role:
The Web Infra team's mission is to empower engineers to build performant, scalable, and accessible product experiences. We build and improve the build infrastructure, component library, and state management system that power all features of Notion's web and desktop client.
As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for evolving the infrastructure strategy and technical architecture, supporting a team of senior engineers and managers to drive execution, and hiring and developing talent on the team. Additionally, as an engineering leader, you will help elevate Notion's entire engineering organization and culture.
What You'll Do:
- You'll build and manage a diverse and inclusive team of engineers and managers working on core parts of Notion's architecture. You'll create a healthy environment in your team that embodies Notion's values.
- You'll recruit, coach, and develop engineers. You'll ensure engineers are regularly receiving feedback and making progress on personal and professional goals.
- You'll facilitate planning—the prioritization, sequencing, and staffing of work—for your team.
- You'll be responsible for maintaining a high-quality bar for everything your team ships.
- You'll own execution in your team to develop a steady cadence of delivering value to your users.
- You'll work with others to shape how Notion's engineering organization works. You'll help develop our technical practices, recruiting and onboarding strategy, planning and prioritization process, and more.
What We're Looking For:
- You have managed senior engineering teams and managers, and have experience in scaling teams.
- You have built, or are committed to building, diverse and inclusive teams.
- You create team environments that are at once collaborative, empowering, supportive, and challenging—ones where engineers do their best work.
- You have a sufficiently deep background in product and technology that you can ask the right questions of your team, balance product, tech, and people concerns, and make hard tradeoffs.
- You think rigorously. You're prepared to tackle the toughest technical problems, understand trade-offs, and enable teams to make decisions and progress.
- You have a high tolerance for ambiguity and change, especially around organizational structure and the boundaries of your role. You enjoy jumping into whatever areas need attention and learning as-you-go.
- You value empathetic and direct communication, particularly when giving and receiving feedback.
Bonus Points:
- You have managed engineering teams at startups before, particularly during periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
- You have experience rolling out engineering and management practices and processes—e.g., code review, performance reviews, and levels and ladders—where they didn't exist before.
- You've managed teams that are across multiple offices.
- You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.
We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.
