Nova Credit offers a dynamic and inclusive work environment where you can meaningfully impact the lives of people historically excluded from the credit system. If you're passionate about leveraging technology to drive financial inclusion, we want to hear from you!
THE OPPORTUNITY
Nova Credit’s Legal & Compliance team is focused on helping the company grow while guiding it through its legal, contractual, and regulatory obligations. Operating in a highly regulated industry, the L&C teams are an essential part of Nova Credit’s business and strategy. In this highly cross-functional role, you would be relied upon for your legal acumen and have broad exposure to Nova Credit’s business operations and product development process.
Our business is complex, and as a team member, you would frequently be asked to help clarify multifaceted issues. If you’re an attorney who loves wrestling with complex problems, coming up with simple and practical solutions, and is always striving for ways to move the business forward, we’d love to hear from you!
This is a NYC-based hybrid role (3 days per week in office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays), full-time position reporting to the General Counsel.
WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH, YOU'LL:
- Get to know Nova Credit's organizational structure, key agreements, and legal processes
- Develop a foundational understanding of the regulatory environment that impacts us and our customers, including FCRA, CCPA/CPRA and other US state privacy laws, GLBA, UK GDPR, Canada's PIPEDA and provincial frameworks, Fair Lending, and Fair Housing

- Get to know the company's working style, goals, mission, and values
- Become acquainted with fellow Novans in our team and across the company, as well as key cross-functional stakeholders in product, engineering, data science, and security
WITHIN THE FIRST QUARTER, YOU'LL:
- Dive deeper into Nova Credit's products, key regulatory features, risks, challenges, and areas for future development with particular attention to how privacy obligations interact with products and processes
- Work hand-in-hand with the product, data science, and engineering teams on new features and product development, embedding privacy-by-design principles and identifying broader regulatory considerations early in the process
- Conduct a thorough review of Nova Credit's existing privacy documentation and identify gaps or areas for improvement
- Start to advise the business on product requirements and limitations across privacy and consumer finance regulatory frameworks
- Get to know the credit reporting and analysis industry, including bureaus, financial institutions, credit providers, and other fintechs
- Review and develop a deep understanding of company policies and procedures, and support ongoing corporate organizational management projects
WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR, YOU'LL:
- Become a key advisor and first point of call for legal and regulatory risks and issues associated with products and features, spanning privacy, consumer financial data regulations, and adjacent requirements
- Own and continuously maintain Nova Credit's global privacy program, including policies, notices, procedures, data subject rights processes and training materials
- Guide our product, engineering, and data teams in navigating privacy and related regulatory frameworks, and serve as a thought partner on new ideas for our product strategies
- Coordinate and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent implementation of legal guidance and alignment on risk
- Keep up on the rapidly evolving privacy and regulatory landscape, including new state privacy law enactments, regulatory guidance, and enforcement trends, and proactively revise and update policies, forms, and agreements where necessary
- Help our Go-to-Market and marketing teams with respect to product positioning and completing privacy, regulatory, and compliance reviews by customers
- Work on cross-functional company initiatives and other special projects as the business grows
YOUR SKILLSET:

- Demonstrated expertise in US and global privacy law
- Proven ability to navigate complex, heavily regulated environments, translating regulatory requirements into practical business guidance; comfort advising across multiple regulatory frameworks simultaneously rather than within a single specialty

- Familiarity with FCRA, Fair Lending, Fair Housing, or other consumer financial regulations is a plus; prior exposure to the consumer financial data or credit reporting space is highly valued
$223,300 - $281,400 per year
