About the Role
The Senior Network Engineer will join the Connectivity Engineering team within Nubank’s Foundation Business Unit, responsible for the core connectivity platforms that support our regulated environments and customer‑facing products in Mexico and across Latin America. Connectivity Engineering designs, builds and operates the network backbone that keeps Nubank’s products securely available to customers around the world and enables our expansion into new countries and partners.
In this role, you will have end‑to‑end ownership across architecture, delivery and operations for regulatory connectivity, product connectivity and third‑party integrations, supporting both on‑premises and cloud environments in a highly available and regulated context. You will help shape our connectivity roadmap, lead critical initiatives, and support the growth of other engineers while remaining hands‑on in production.
You will also play a key role in our multi‑year journey to evolve from traditionally managed networking toward an automation‑, observability‑ and governance‑first connectivity stack, including responsible use of AI to improve reliability and operations.
What You Will Do
You will:
- Design and implement scalable, resilient network solutions aligned with business and regulatory requirements.
- Own High‑Level and Low‑Level Designs (HLD/LLD) for connectivity initiatives across data centers, WAN, cloud edge and partners.
- Build and evolve data center and WAN connectivity platforms (including VXLAN/EVPN fabrics), ensuring reliability, performance and observability at scale.
- Support production environments with incident troubleshooting, change execution and root cause analysis, including participation in a weekly on‑call rotation.
- Manage and improve network observability and monitoring, analyze performance and implement optimizations for speed, reliability and efficiency.
- Conduct network risk assessments and audits, helping ensure compliance with Nubank’s security policies and regulatory requirements.
- Drive automation and observability initiatives, helping us move from manual processes to automation‑ and observability‑driven operations over time.
- Collaborate with Cloud, Security, Infrastructure and Product teams, vendors and partners, improving documentation, standards and operational practices, and mentoring less senior engineers.
What We Are Looking For
Must‑have
- 5+ years of hands‑on experience as a Network Engineer (or similar role) designing and operating production networks at scale.
Networking fundamentals (hands‑on experience):
- Layer 2: VLANs, STP, LACP, port security.
- Layer 3: Strong experience with BGP (iBGP/eBGP) and OSPF; exposure to VXLAN; IPv6 experience in production is a strong plus.
- High availability: Design and operation of redundant topologies using protocols such as HSRP/VRRP and fast convergence techniques.
Network security and services:
- ACLs, route‑maps, prefix‑lists, NAT, VPN (IPSec-based, such as DMVPN or similar), GRE.
- Solid experience operating Next‑Gen Firewalls, ideally Palo Alto and/or Fortinet (policy design, HA, troubleshooting).
Infrastructure and connectivity:
- Experience with WAN technologies such as MPLS, L3VPN, L2VPN, SD‑WAN or Carrier Ethernet (strong depth in several of them).
- Understanding of data center architectures, preferably spine‑leaf, and their operational implications.
- Knowledge of VXLAN/EVPN fabrics for data center architectures.
- Strong knowledge of core network services and protocols: DNS, DHCP, NTP, SNMP, AAA, TCP/IP.
- Experience with QoS mechanisms (classification/marking, queuing, shaping) to manage performance and prioritize critical traffic in WAN and data center environments.
Platforms, tooling and operations:
- Hands‑on experience with enterprise load balancers (e.g., F5 BIG‑IP LTM/GTM or equivalent).
- Experience in multi‑vendor environments (e.g., Juniper, Cisco, etc.).
- Familiarity with monitoring/observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ThousandEyes or similar).
- Strong production operations experience: troubleshooting and incident handling, change and problem management, and packet‑level analysis (e.g., tcpdump, Wireshark) to diagnose complex network and application‑layer issues.
Ways of working:
- Experience working in an Agile environment (e.g., Scrum or Kanban), collaborating with cross‑functional teams and stakeholders.
Nice‑to‑have
- Experience with network automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, Ansible and Python for automated network provisioning and configuration.
- Cloud networking experience (AWS or similar), including VPC design, hybrid connectivity and security controls.
- Experience with Kubernetes or modern platform environments, especially in how they interact with underlying network and security layers.
- Exposure to financial systems and networks (e.g., SPEI, DIMO or similar payment/clearing systems).
- Certifications such as CCNP, JNCIP, AWS or equivalent (valued but not mandatory).
- Experience with security tools (IDS/IPS, SIEM) and integrating network telemetry into security monitoring.
- Exposure to AI/ML applications in networking (e.g., anomaly detection, traffic analysis, predictive capacity planning), and interest in helping identify realistic, high‑impact use cases for these capabilities in our environment.
How You Operate
You will fit well if you:
- Have a strong sense of ownership and accountability over systems, platforms and outcomes.
- Are comfortable navigating ambiguity, connecting the dots and driving solutions end‑to‑end.
- Communicate clearly and proactively with teams, regions and stakeholders, tailoring your message to the audience.
- Balance hands‑on execution with architectural thinking, knowing when to deep‑dive and when to guide.
- Collaborate effectively with peers, vendors and cross‑functional teams, valuing feedback, documentation and knowledge sharing.
- Enjoy mentoring and supporting other engineers, helping them grow technically and in how they operate.
- Demonstrate strong crisis management, with fast and assertive responses during high‑severity incidents.
Role Location & Working Model
- Location: Mexico (MX).
- Model: Hybrid – from January 2027, we expect three days per week in the office, with flexibility aligned to Nubank’s hybrid work guidelines.
Diversity & Inclusion
We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team that reflects the customers we serve. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and identities, even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements. If you are excited about building and operating critical connectivity platforms at scale, we’d love to hear from you.
