Category Manager

The role:

As a Category Merchant you will lead strategic sourcing and category strategy for your assigned categories. This includes owning our assortment and pricing, and partnering with marketing and ecommerce teams to drive demand and sales for your categories. Successful candidates will be customer focused and have a strong bias for data led decision making. They will have a high level of business ownership, demonstrate strong communication skills with both internal and external parties, and have a passion for bringing exceptional quality products to market for our customers. Key elements of your strategy will include enhancing customer experience to drive sales and gross margin for Nuts.com. This role will also support adherence to food safety and quality policies, practices, and standards (e.g. GMP, HAACP, etc) across the warehouse and documenting and escalating food safety concerns to the food safety team for action. This position reports to the Vice President of Merchandising. 

What you'll do:

  • Act as the business owner of your categories. This includes building a deep understanding of internal and external variables that impact our business
  • Own category assortment including an innovation roadmap to capitalize on industry trends and maintain relevance with the customer
  • Negotiate with suppliers and build strong vendor relationships, driving gross margin and topline performance
  • Work cross functionally to ensure we remain in stock with healthy inventory levels in your categories
  • Plan seasonally appropriate assortment, promotions and features to drive customer demand for your categories
  • Always aim to exceed margin and sales targets with thoughtful pricing and promotional strategies

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Supply Chain, Product Development, Merchandising preferred, but not required
  • At least 4-6 years of category management experience, preferably within food & beverage
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong sense for product and consumer trends, combined with solid understanding of technical Merchandising concepts
  • You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities
  • Be analytically talented, an effective storyteller, and make data driven decisions
  • Have experience managing the performance of the product portfolio including developing and growing vendor relationships, expanding and culling product selection, negotiating contracts, setting a category strategy and building an annual plan to improve sales and margins
  • Experience in HACCP, allergen control, GMP, and sanitation
  • A passion for great quality food and creating exceptional customer experiences
