The Asset Management Property Operations Department is responsible for protecting and enhancing the value of City-owned real estate assets and serving the operational needs of tenant businesses. In addition, the department assists NYCEDC in the allocation of resources among its properties.
Position Overview: The Mechanic position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of plumbing and mechanical systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. This role supports a broad range of building systems—including hydronic heating/cooling, pumps, boilers, mechanical equipment, and piping systems for the Operations and Maintenance of City-owned properties within the Asset Management portfolio at NYCEDC, specifically the Brooklyn Army Terminal Campus in Brooklyn NY and other properties as assigned within the EDC portfolio. This role reports to the VP of Operations in Sunset Park.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
General Plumbing Tasks:
- Perform basic plumbing repairs such as fixing leaks, replacing faucets, clearing minor clogs, and repairing toilets and sinks. Assist with small piping repairs, fixture replacements, and domestic water pump repairs.
- Conduct routine inspections of plumbing systems for leaks, wear, or performance issues. Replace cartridges, flushometers, valves, traps, aerators, and simple plumbing components.
Facility Maintenance Duties:
- Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and emergency services as directed, including electrical, gas, water & sewer, heating ventilation and air conditioner (HVAC), carpentry, painting, masonry and general janitorial needs. Perform cleaning duties when required.
- Respond to service calls from building occupants and address basic facility needs promptly.
- Conduct daily inspections of assigned properties and advise supervisor of any maintenance issues or repairs needed. Ability to work autonomously but also receive guidance from the Specialty Mechanic or Lead Mechanic.
- When directed, provide technical guidance to maintenance personnel including scheduling and coordinating work assignments as per supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned
Support for Skilled Trades & Contractors:
- Monitor and report work performed by out-sourced contractors when they are performing work. Escort and coordinate with vendors and service contractors as needed.
- Assist licensed plumbers, HVAC techs, and electricians with tasks such as staging equipment, shut-down preparation, and simple labor support.
Documentation & Safety:
- Complete work orders, logs, and inspection forms accurately. Follow safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, PPE requirements, and company guidelines. Maintain inventory of basic tools and supplies.
Emergency Response:
- Respond to emergencies as required. Must be available and responsive 24/7 and able to help provide solutions during the decision-making process as issues arise. Conduct snow removal duties at assigned sites
Duty Station and Site Reporting:
- This is an onsite position that requires a 5-day presence at the Sunset Park Campus with travel to our main office at One Liberty Plaza as needed.

Certifications: While not required at the time of hire, the following certifications (not limited to) are encouraged and may be obtained during employment:
- OSHA 30 Hour
- FDNY S12 Supervision of Sprinkler Systems (Citywide)
- FDNY S13 Supervision of Standpipe Systems (Citywide)
- FDNY S95 Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems
- Backhoes/heavy equipment training (Dump Truck/front-end loader/skid steer/backhoe)
- NYS Driver license Class D
- Power Industrial Truck Certification
- Aerial Work Platform Certification
- CPR/AED/Basic First Aid Training
- TWIC Certification
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification is a plus.
- 5+ years of experience required with working knowledge in maintenance, inspections and repairs.
- Basic understanding of plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Ability to use handheld and desktop computer devices to input work orders and record work.
- Must maintain a valid NYS Driver License with clean driving record.
- Working knowledge of construction and handyman repair techniques. Experience in electrical, plumbing, HVAC and equipment associated with trades.
- Experience working with hand tools, power tools, and materials, and equipment associated with construction related trades.
- Knowledge of New York City.
- New York City residence required within 180 days of hire.
Salary Range
$55,000 - $57,000 USD
