Power Systems Application Engineer
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) works to make the power grid smarter by developing and deploying innovative information technology solutions to meet New York’s dynamic energy needs. The NYISO’s Operations department invites applications for a full-time Power Systems Application Engineer.
The Power Systems Application Engineer will update and maintain the electric power system model used by the Energy Management System (EMS), Business Management System (BMS), Outage Scheduling System (OUS), Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) and the Transmission Congestion Contract (TCC) applications. Provide support in maintaining all SCADA/EMS advanced applications such as State Estimator (SE) and Security Analysis (SA). Provide support in defining and maintaining all the ICCP links and measurement data in Ranger SCADA system, which are required for all EMS and BMS applications. Maintain and support the new control center video wall, side wall visualization displays, and all hand drawn station one-line diagrams along with tabular displays. Also provide support in updating and maintaining the Power System Explorer/Data Engineering (PSE/DE) Tool software. Develop and apply a working knowledge of the New York State high voltage transmission system and the network model database software to support the NYISO market and security functions. Support the real-time power system analysis, primarily the estate estimator and contingency analysis functions. Support and maintain Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) data. and all hand drawn station one-line diagrams
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain the transmission network and generation resource models that are used to support the day-Ahead and Real-Time energy markets as well as the basis for the TCC market.
- Ensure integrity of such power system models by development and implementation of Business Owner Quality Assurance procedures.
- Develop and implement ICCP data requirements to support the ISO State Estimation function in coordination with NY Transmission Owners and neighboring control areas.
- Provide Power System Operations Dispatcher support and Operator training for all EMS applications such as, DLF, and SCADA.
- Develop and maintain software and operating procedures to address special market and operating conditions.
- Maintain and support modeling and software changes to support new resource types that are emerging to replace older generating units.
- Maintain and support modeling and software changes to support aggregations which include the metering and dispatch signals to these devices.
- Support in supplying additional power system models to NYISO teams for the purpose of testing and training on emerging resource technologies and the software changes that are needed
- Maintain and support sub zonal tie lines definition and associated PI measurement data for Billing and Settlement applications
- Maintain rating database.
- Maintain and implement real-time security analysis functions.
- Maintain and support Common Information Model (CIM) station one-line diagrams and all hand drawn station one-lines and tabular displays for Real-Time operation functions.
- Maintain and validate PMPC test data to support Network Model update and provide data support & coordination with Member Relations.
- Maintain and support the Wide Area View visualization applications.
- Maintain and support Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) data
- Maintain and support the control center one-line diagram and the side wall visualization displays.
- Maintain and support enhanced State Estimation.
- Maintain and support the Power System Explorer/Data Engineering (PSE/DE) Tool software.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree (BS) in Electrical Engineering and coursework in power systems, electrical engineering, power system components (generation and transmission equipment, concepts and principles) and mathematical modeling of power system components required; Master’s degree (MS) in Electrical Engineering desired.
- Three to five years of experience in power system engineering, unit commitment operation, operations or related discipline; working knowledge of state estimator programs desired; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, vendors, Market Participants and the general public.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
- Intermediate competency in Windows operating environment using MS Office applications, database spreadsheets, e-mail and internet programs. Working knowledge of UNIX desired.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Contact with staff and public will occur. Travel may be required to attend and/or conduct meetings, conferences and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends or holidays.

Salary Range
$78,500 - $131,100 USD
