Intern - Market Mitigation & Analysis

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. Our summer internship programs give young professionals the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of New York electricity markets, bulk electricity systems and how we plan for New York State’s energy future.

The NYISO is seeking a Market Mitigation and Analysis Intern to support market impact analysis, tool development, and data visualization. The intern will help develop an economic withholding sensitivity analysis tool designed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the team’s market screening process.

Working alongside members of the Market Mitigation and Analysis team, the intern will also help modernize recurring public-facing data visualizations and learn how the team evaluates economic withholding and potential market manipulation. The internship combines electricity market analysis, programming, data processing, and practical exposure to market monitoring functions.

 

Responsibilities

  • Support market impact analysis related to economic withholding.
  • Develop an economic withholding sensitivity analysis tool to improve the team’s screening process.
  • Test and refine the tool to support accurate, repeatable analysis.
  • Improve the efficiency of recurring data-processing and chart-development activities.
  • Update monthly public-facing visualizations covering a range of electricity market information.
  • Document the analytical approach, tool functionality, and lessons learned from withholding cases.
  • Review market data for trends, patterns, and potential areas requiring additional analysis.
  • Shadow team members to learn about market mitigation and withholding functions.
  • Collaborate with team members and incorporate feedback into analytical tools and deliverables.
  • Present completed work, findings, and recommendations to the team.

 

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Economics, Econometrics, or a related field.
  • Coursework or experience in power systems, economics, electricity markets, or econometrics.
  • Python or comparable programming experience.
  • Experience with data processing, analysis, or visualization.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and interest in developing accurate, repeatable analytical tools.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly in written and verbal formats.
  • Ability to collaborate with team members while independently managing assigned work.
  • Interest in market mitigation, market power, and wholesale electricity markets.

 

The NYISO offers the flexibility to work both in the office and remotely, providing our employees with an enhanced work life balance. This internship will be a hybrid program, with the expectation that employees will be local to the Albany, NY area.

Salary Range

$22 - $33 USD
