Trust & Safety Investigator (Hybrid @ Bellevue, WA)
The OfferUp Trust & Safety team plays an important role in helping keep OfferUp a safe and trusted local marketplace. We partner closely with Legal, Customer Service, Analytics, and law enforcement agencies to identify harmful activity, protect our users, and support investigations when needed.
We’re looking for a highly curious and resourceful Investigator to join the team. This role is ideal for someone who naturally asks questions, enjoys digging into details, and likes solving problems others might overlook.
You don’t need years of investigative experience, but you do need strong instincts for asking the right questions, following information across systems, and connecting dots. This position works under the direction of the Trust & Safety Manager, who will provide ongoing mentorship, hands-on training, and a structured onboarding plan to help you build the skills needed to investigate fraud and suspicious activity on our marketplace.
If you’re the type of person who notices when something doesn’t add up and can’t resist figuring out why, you’ll likely thrive here.
Here's more of what you will get to do
- Investigate reports of suspected fraud or criminal activity within the OfferUp marketplace
- Ask questions, review data, and follow investigative leads to understand what occurred
- Use internal tools and available information to identify patterns and uncover suspicious behavior
- Accurately document cases in our case management system, ensuring information is clear and complete
- Support responses to law enforcement requests under team guidance
- Handle sensitive and confidential information with care and professionalism
- Monitor trends in fraud, scams, and marketplace abuse
- Assist with escalated incidents and help the team respond quickly to emerging risks
- Collaborate with internal teams to better understand issues and prevent future incidents
- Prepare clear and concise summaries of investigative findings
You'll thrive in this role if you have:
- A naturally curious mindset — you ask questions and want to understand how things work
- Strong problem-solving instincts and willingness to dig deeper when something doesn’t make sense
- Resourcefulness in finding information and connecting dots across multiple sources
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to analyze information and make thoughtful decisions with guidance
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Comfort learning new tools, systems, and processes
- Ability to manage confidential information responsibly
- Ability to adapt quickly in a collaborative and evolving environment
- Available to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as part of “on-call” coverage
Helpful, but Not Required
- Coursework or interest in criminal justice, cybersecurity, fraud prevention, or Trust & Safety
- Experience in customer service, retail operations, analytics, or similar investigative/problem-solving roles
- Bilingual skills
- Interest in online safety, digital marketplaces, or investigations
