Lead QA Engineer
About OfficeSpace:
OfficeSpace is the AI workplace management platform that helps teams plan, connect, and perform in the modern workplace. As a performance-based, PE-backed company, we hire based on merit and a willingness to do what it takes to succeed long-term. You’re a great fit for the role if you’re entrepreneurial, passionate, motivated by building at light speed, and an Agentic AI early adopter. Our world-class teams operate in the US, Canada, and Costa Rica in a culture of trust, respect, growth, and impact.
Role Summary:
We’re looking for a Lead Quality Engineer who is a hands-on technical leader, not a people manager. This role is responsible for the technical direction, architecture, and execution of quality engineering across the product.
You will own and maintain our testing frameworks, make architectural decisions related to quality, and act as the primary technical unblocker for the Quality Engineering (QE) team. You will break down work with the QE team, guide implementation, and ensure testing approaches scale with our platform and enterprise needs.
You will collaborate closely with development team leads on test strategy, load testing, and quality risks, while remaining focused on technical quality execution.
We are open to candidates coming from either a Lead-level Software Engineer background or a Lead-level QA / Quality Automation Engineer background.
What You’ll Do:
Technical Leadership & Testing Architecture
- Own the architecture, design, and long-term health of our testing frameworks.
- Maintain and evolve testing infrastructure to ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Make and document technical decisions related to testing strategy, tooling, and patterns.
- Act as the primary technical unblocker for the QE team.
- Leverage AI-powered tools to accelerate test creation, maintenance, analysis, and troubleshooting.
Shift-Left Quality
- Drive a shift-left quality mindset by engaging early in design and development discussions.
- Influence quality and test strategy early without requiring developers to write or maintain automated tests.
- Keep test automation ownership fully within the QE team.
Hands-On Test Engineering
- Design, build, and maintain automation frameworks owned by the QE team.
- Ensure QE engineers are writing and maintaining automated tests using:
- Watir and/or Playwright for UI and end-to-end automation
- k6 for performance and load testing
- Execute load tests using k6 and analyze results.
- Use AI-assisted tooling to improve test coverage, reduce maintenance overhead, and increase confidence in results.
Team Leadership & Execution
- Break down work and technical initiatives with the QE team, applying an agile mindset to deliver automation incrementally and pragmatically.
- Provide hands-on technical guidance, reviews, and mentorship to QE engineers.
- Collaborate with development team leads on:
- Overall test strategy
- Load test planning
- Load test execution results and findings
Quality, Performance & Reliability
- Maintain ownership of the testing framework architecture and health.
- Ensure the QE team delivers effective automated coverage across UI, API, and performance testing.
- Guide load and performance testing efforts to support enterprise-scale requirements.
- Partner with development leads to interpret results and identify system-level risks.
- Proactively identify quality risks, reliability gaps, and technical debt using metrics and AI-assisted analysis.
What You Bring:
Core Technical Skills
- 7+ years of experience as a software engineer or quality / automation engineer.
- Experience operating at a lead level, owning technical direction and influencing team practices.
- Strong experience designing, maintaining, and evolving automated testing frameworks.
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Ruby, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, or Python).
- Experience testing APIs (REST and/or GraphQL).
Testing & Tooling
- Hands-on experience with:
- Watir and Playwright for automation
- k6 for load and performance testing
- Strong understanding of modern web application architectures.
- Experience executing, analyzing, and communicating load test results.
- Proven experience owning large automated test suites, including scheduling and running full regression suites at scale beyond local execution (e.g., nightly or continuous execution), and integrating them into CI pipelines to support fast, reliable releases.
AI & Quality Acceleration
- Interest in evolving AI-assisted quality engineering practices.
- Experience using AI tools to accelerate test creation, maintenance, analysis, and debugging.
- A mindset focused on reimagining quality engineering in an AI-accelerated world—not just automating existing patterns, but breaking the mold and redefining how quality is achieved.
- Curiosity and initiative to experiment with emerging AI capabilities to improve signal quality, reduce manual effort, and evolve testing practices beyond traditional approaches.
- Interest in shaping the future of AI-assisted quality engineering as the industry rapidly changes.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Proven ability to lead technically without formal people-management responsibilities.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with QE engineers and development leads.
- Comfortable making architectural decisions and clearly explaining tradeoffs.
