The Opportunity:
Ohalo Genetics is seeking a motivated Genotyping Research Associate I to support our high-throughput genotyping pipeline. In this role, you’ll work alongside experienced Research Associates and Scientists to screen plant tissue samples and conduct key molecular biology experiments. This is an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented individual to gain hands-on experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies and molecular biology techniques, contributing to impactful plant genetics research.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct DNA/RNA extraction and prepare samples for high-throughput workflows
- Perform PCR and/or qPCR in accordance with established SOPs
- Organize and meticulously track hundreds of DNA samples using our custom database
- Execute automated genotyping workflows and assist in maintaining the equipment
- Communicate results, findings, and any technical issues promptly with team leads
- Document all procedures and observations accurately in an electronic lab notebook
- Adhere to protocols for molecular biology and biotechnology experiments with precision
- Conduct analytical assays for quality control (QC) and research purposes
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe lab environment, adhering to safety protocols
Candidate Profile:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Plant Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field
- 1–2 years of hands-on laboratory experience in academic or industry settings
- Understanding and experience with fundamental molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, qPCR, DNA/RNA isolation, molecular cloning, sequencing library preparation)
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate data management
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and lab database systems for data tracking
- Excellent communication skills for collaborative work and timely reporting
- Ability to work independently, adapt quickly to new tasks, and thrive in a team environment
Desired skills/experience:
- Knowledge of Illumina sequencing, library preparation, and quality control methods
- Familiarity with automated liquid handling equipment
- Demonstrated experience in following detailed protocols accurately
- Experience with analytical instruments (e.g., Flow Cytometer, Nanodrop, Bioanalyzer)
- Initiative in process improvement and troubleshooting lab procedures
- Basic understanding of plant genetics, breeding, or tissue culture techniques
Position Details:
- On-site (one location) from Monday to Friday
- Physical demands include standing for 40-50% of the day and performing tasks requiring manual dexterity (e.g., pipetting)
