Position: Research Associate I - Botanical Librarian

The Opportunity: 

Ohalo Genetics is seeking a motivated Research Associate I - Botanical Librarian to support the inventory management aspects for a production focused team. The successful candidate will be exceptionally organized and detail-oriented, prioritizing accuracy but motivated to find efficient solutions. The candidate will initially spend most of their time learning and supporting current workflows with data cleaning, inventory validation, organizing plant materials, shipping and receiving of plant materials, and coordinating tasks with other teams, while working towards finding ways to provide this support more efficiently.

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain a collection of plant material in a lab by keeping it organized and coordinating the activities necessary to maintain viability and enable their utilization. 
  • Perform data collection+analysis and provide rapid and clear updates to the status of plant materials and progress towards project goals.
  • Arrange plant materials to appropriate locations (shelves, racks, incubators, growth chambers, refrigerators) in the lab according to test results and data analysis.
  • Find and implement ways and tools to improve sterility, speed and efficiency.
  • Provide assistance in other aspects as needed, such as shipping and receiving plant material.
  • Directly handling plant material such as seed processing, germination, tissue culture, and sample collection.

Candidate Profile: 

  •  Exceptionally organized and detail oriented
  •  Takes great care in accurate record keeping including proactively admitting mistakes 
  • Always on the lookout for oddities that could be potential errors or discoveries 
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal (ability to write protocols, follow instructions and SOPs and instruct others)
  • Positive attitude and good interpersonal skills
  • Associates or Bachelor degree, ideally in Biotechnology, Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Sciences or related field, with 2+ years of post-graduate laboratory or inventory management experience
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, start-up company environment
  • Safety consciousness

Desired skills/experience: 

  • Experience working in sterile conditions (aseptic technique), especially plant tissue culture
  • Experience with inventory or project management (ideally with plants, tissue, seeds, or other biological entities) 
  • Proficiency with Lab Information Management Software, BigQuery, Electronic Notebook Software or SQL
  • Proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets (particularly with creating formulas and pivot tables)

Below is the pay range for this position that we reasonably expect to pay. Individual compensation is based on various factors including experience, education, skillset, and other relevant qualifications. This range is for Mills River, NC and may be adjusted to the labor market in other geographic areas.  $60,000 - $67,000.
