Director of Marketing
The Opportunity
If you believe great marketing is about more than producing content, managing events, and keeping the website current – that the real job is to build a brand people remember, create demand in the right markets, and turn that demand into growth – keep reading.
Oliva Gibbs has built a strong foundation: a respected reputation, deep industry expertise, a growing client development function, and a clear ambition to expand revenue, market reach, and penetration within the accounts that matter most. We’re looking for a marketing leader who can bring greater discipline, evidence, and commercial focus to that foundation.
The Director of Marketing will own the firm’s brand and demand-generation strategy, balancing the long-term work of building the firm’s visibility, recognition, and consideration among target clients with the short-term work of generating qualified demand. You will build systems that connect market --> brand --> target accounts --> demand --> pipeline --> revenue. This work includes establishing clear MQL and Marketing/Client Development Service Level Agreement expectations, creating a disciplined measurement framework for reach and penetration, and ensuring marketing investment is allocated based on what actually drives growth.
This is a strategic operator role with genuine influence. You will work directly with firm leadership – reporting to the President of Business Operations. You will have the opportunity to reshape how the firm goes to market, build a distinctive and memorable brand, and create a marketing function that is viewed not as a service department, but as a trusted partner in the firm’s growth.
What You Will Own
Brand & Market Strategy
- Own the firm’s brand and market strategy, translating business objectives into clear priorities by market, audience, practice, and target accounts
- Build mental availability and market preference through a distinctive, consistent brand and a multi-year brand-building strategy
- Lead the strategy for a long-term brand campaign, partnering with external experts for creative execution
Demand Generation & Account Growth
- Build and activate the firm’s target account universe, establishing a clear view of priority accounts, current penetration, reach, engagement, client retention, and opportunities for growth
- Develop demand-generation programs that increase activity within priority accounts and expand reach into new accounts and/or markets
- Define and operationalize the MQL and Marketing/Client Development SLA, partnering with Client Development and attorneys to turn marketing-generated demand into qualified opportunities and revenue
Marketing Investment & Measurement
- Maintain a healthy balance between building the firm’s long-term brand and generating near-term demand, with an approximately 50/50 investment allocation and quarterly reporting to firm leadership
- Use evidence, testing, and performance data to determine where to invest, what to scale, and what to stop doing
Business Partnership & Leadership
- Serve as a trusted strategic partner across the firm – bringing market insight and growth recommendations while actively listening to feedback from our frontline employees
- Lead the marketing team and external partners with clear priorities, accountability, and high standards for execution
- Align with the Director of Client Development to build an integrated Marketing & Client Development operating model in which both teams share priorities, definitions, data, and accountability for growth
How Success Is Measured
- Clearly defined, named target account list is established and actively used to drive marketing and lead-generation activity
- Baseline reach, penetration, and client retention metrics are known, regularly reported and trending in the right direction
- MQL is clearly defined and understood across both Marketing and Client Development
- A formal Marketing/Client Development SLA is established, measured, and honored by both Marketing and Client Development
- Marketing is consistently generating qualified demand that enters the firm’s BD pipeline
- Multi-year brand-building campaign is strategized and underway with a high-quality external partner
- The firm’s market presence is distinctive, consistent and recognizable
- Partners and practice leaders describe the Director of Marketing as a trusted, collaborative business partner
Who We Are Looking For
You know how to build a brand people remember, create demand before a buyer has an immediate need, and turn that awareness into action when the opportunity arises.
You’ve worked in environments where:
- Leadership has ambitious growth goals but needs marketing to turn those goals into a disciplined strategy
- The sales cycle is long, complex, and relationship-driven
- Marketing success can’t be reduced to clicks, impressions, or leads
- Relationship building internally and externally has been paramount to success
Required
- 8+ years of progressive marketing experience, including meaningful ownership of brand strategy and demand generation in a complex B2B environment
- 2+ years of experience leading marketing in professional services – law, consulting, accounting, financial services or other
- Proven track record of connecting marketing strategy to business growth, using data and evidence to make decisions about markets, audiences, investment, and performance
- Deep understanding of brand building, demand generation, market penetration, and the balance between long-term brand investment and short-term sales activation
- Experience building target-account strategies, marketing/client development alignment, MQL definitions and SLAs
- Ability to influence without authority
- Strong strategic, analytical, communication and operational skills with the ability to move from strategy to execution
- Experience leading a team of marketing professionals and third-party vendors
- Must be based in Houston, TX
Preferred
- Oil and gas industry experience
Who Will Not Succeed in This Role
Be direct with yourself before applying – this role is likely not a fit if you:
- See marketing only as a service function focused on fulfilling attorney requests, producing content, managing events, or maintaining the marketing calendar rather than driving growth.
- Measure activity instead of outcomes. If impressions, clicks, followers, or deliverables are your primary definition of success instead of measuring reach, penetration, demand, pipeline and revenue.
- Struggle to influence without authority. Success requires earning the trust of Partners and practice leaders, challenging them when appropriate, and getting people who don’t report to you aligned around a common strategy.
- Think brand and demand are separate worlds. We need someone who understands how long-term brand building and short-term sales activation work together to create sustainable growth.
Our Core Values
Core values at Oliva Gibbs are not decorative. They inform our hiring decisions, our performance reviews, and how we operate day to day.
Culture of Collaboration - You work with attorneys, CDMs and firm leadership - not around them.
Fanatical Client Service - You bring the same thoughtfulness, responsiveness, and excellence to internal partners and prospective clients that the firm delivers to existing clients.
A Passion for Teaching & Learning - You believe that great marketing starts with understanding the business, the market, and the client. You enjoy learning from subject matter experts and helping others turn their expertise into compelling, market-facing opportunities.
Compensation & Structure
Oliva Gibbs offers a competitive base salary commensurate with experience, with incentive compensation tied to activity metrics, performance, and firmwide targets paid out as semi-annual bonuses. Benefits include comprehensive healthcare (medical, dental, vision), 401K with match, and a progressive PTO policy.
Based in Houston, this hybrid role reports directly to the firm’s President, with a clear, executive-backed mandate.
