Role:  Marketing & Communication Intern

Location:  Durban, South Africa (Hybrid, 3 days a week in Studio)

About the role: 

OLIVER South Africa’s Marketing & Communication Internship Programme is a 12-month opportunity designed to provide practical experience across social media, content and digital marketing within a fast-paced creative environment.

As a Social Media Intern, you will work closely with the social media, content and creative teams to gain hands-on exposure to content planning, community management, social listening, campaign execution and performance reporting. Through structured support, coaching and mentorship, you will develop the practical knowledge, skills and confidence needed to begin a successful career in social media and digital marketing.

What you will be doing:

• Support the planning, scheduling and publishing of content across relevant social media platforms.
• Assist with developing social media content calendars aligned with campaign and brand objectives.
• Write clear, engaging and platform-appropriate social media copy.
• Work with creative teams to help coordinate visual and video content.
• Support day-to-day community management by monitoring comments, messages and online conversations.
• Escalate customer queries, complaints or sensitive issues to the appropriate team members.
• Monitor social media trends, platform updates, competitor activity and emerging content formats.
• Assist with social listening and identify relevant audience insights and engagement opportunities.
• Support the execution of organic and paid social media campaigns.
• Help ensure that published content follows brand guidelines, tone of voice and approval processes.
• Assist with campaign tracking, data collection and social media performance reporting.
• Contribute ideas during brainstorming, content-planning and campaign-development sessions.
• Work collaboratively with internal teams and stakeholders to support campaign delivery.
• Participate in social media projects and activities that contribute to client and business objectives.
• Attend structured training, coaching and mentorship sessions throughout the 12-month programme.

What you need to be great in this role: 

• A genuine interest in social media, digital marketing, content and online communities.
• A relevant completed Degree or National Diploma in Marketing, Communications, Media Studies, Journalism or a related field
• An understanding of major social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X and YouTube.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Good copywriting, proofreading and storytelling abilities.
• Creativity and an awareness of current digital and cultural trends.
• Strong planning, organisational and administrative skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
• A basic understanding of social media metrics, analytics and reporting.
• Professionalism, sound judgement and the ability to represent brands responsibly online.
• A proactive, solutions-focused and audience-oriented approach.
• The ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with social media management, design or analytics tools would be advantageous.
• A positive attitude, adaptability and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced creative environment.

Most importantly, you are curious, digitally savvy and eager to develop the practical skills needed to build a successful career in social media.
