Job Description

The Senior GIS Technician role is an experienced position that independently performs non-routine geospatial editing and design assignments by applying diversified knowledge of engineering and design principles and practices. This position may coordinate efforts of less experienced technicians and collaborate with technical staff to find the best approach to solve engineering and design needs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs intermediate- to advanced-level design and geospatial calculations while working under minimal direction and supervision
  • Selects and recommends design approaches and prepares preliminary designs for engineering staff
  • Provide training or act as a mentor for less experienced staff
  • Lead floodplain mapping effort and documentation for 2D modeling projects
  • Prepare and submit geospatial deliverables, such as floodplain mapping, to external agencies such as FEMA or state floodplain agencies
  • Conduct & lead field investigations and data collection efforts for asset management projects
  • Develop tools in the ESRI framework to automate routine calculations for current and future projects. Provide documentation for the development of these tools, and guides on their use
  •  Demonstrate their use to engineering staff for future projects
  • Prepare AGO websites, both for internal and external data presentation. Set up field data collection procedures to integrate and upload data to the AGO by field staff from their smartphones/tablets

This position may work in all types of terrain or weather conditions on project sites in various stages of construction and attend client meetings as needed.

Project Coordination: Lead and manage GIS projects or tasks from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards

Map Production: Design, develop, and produce high-quality maps using ESRI software for various applications

Spatial Data Management: Handle and maintain spatial data for accurate geographic representations, ensuring data integrity and usability

Technical Expertise: Serve as a subject matter expert on GIS, providing guidance to junior team members and stakeholders

Data Analysis: Conduct spatial analyses and prepare data visualizations to support project goals and decision-making processes

Quality Assurance: Review GIS data, maps, and related products for accuracy, consistency, and completeness

Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, planners, and scientist, to integrate GIS insights into broader project plans. Work with the environmental discipline and water technical expertise to create innovative products and solutions for our clients

Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including reports, maps, and metadata, to ensure project transparency and continuity

Olsson has one opportunity for a Senior GIS Technical and will consider candidates interested in being located in or near our Overland Park, KS office. This role provides a hybrid work setting. 

 

Qualifications

You are passionate about:

  • Performing complex spatial data manipulation and analysis
  • Being precise and providing solutions as well as addressing technical challenges, troubleshoot GIS issues and propose efficient solutions
  • Providing monthly innovation or process improvement meetings for our team members
  • Attending ESRI’s user conference and reporting latest software updates, capabilities, innovation and trends for consideration and implementation
  • Streamlining 2D modeling processes related to land cover data and aerial imagery analysis as well as floodplain mapping
  • Intermediate knowledge of a programming language relevant to ESRI suite.

You bring to the team:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field preferred
  • A minimum of six years of experience using appropriate software
  • Intermediate knowledge of a programming language relevant to ESRI suite
  • Adept in verbal and written communication
  • Solid interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable technologies
  • A valid driver’s license and good driving history
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule
  • Professional representation of Olsson at all times
