Director of Engineering - ML / AI

About the Role 

As a Director of AI/ML Engineering, you will lead a team of engineers developing, deploying and maintaining AI/ML pipelines, APIs and applications that are used across OM1 product areas. This will include pipelines, APIs and applications for PhenOM, a generative AI foundational model we've developed that can predict outcomes based on patient clinical histories. It also includes agentic applications that utilize pre-trained LLMs to rapidly accelerate both internal and external user-facing workflows.

We are looking for a strategic leader and technical expert who can drive engineering excellence while building and managing high-performing teams. You will be responsible for setting technical direction, mentoring senior engineers, and ensuring our AI/ML infrastructure scales to meet business objectives. Candidates must have extensive experience with AI/ML tools and technologies for deploying and maintaining models that can process data in batch and/or real-time, combined with proven leadership and people management experience.

We are looking for candidates that have used AI code editors or applications heavily to accelerate development workflows and can guide their teams in adopting these tools effectively. An ideal candidate would also have experience leading teams that develop agentic applications or tools.


What You’ll Do at OM1

  • Lead and manage a team of AI/ML engineers, providing technical guidance, career development, and performance management
  • Define and execute the technical strategy for AI/ML infrastructure and model deployment across the organization
  • Drive architectural decisions for deploying and operating AI/ML models in production at scale. Evaluate and establish standards for tools and technologies to ensure alignment with industry best practices
  • Oversee the design and implementation of APIs that seamlessly integrate data, AI/ML models and downstream applications
  • Provide executive-level technical leadership for core strategic AI/ML initiatives, working closely with senior leadership to align technical roadmaps with business objectives
  • Build and scale the AI/ML engineering team, including hiring, onboarding, and developing talent pipelines
  • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and engineering excellence within your organization
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration with Product Management, Data Science, and other stakeholders within a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Champion agentic application development initiatives across the engineering organization
  • Establish engineering best practices, code review standards, and quality assurance processes

What Experience You’ll Bring

Leadership & Management

  • 3+ years of engineering leadership experience
  • Proven track record of building and scaling high-performing engineering teams
  • Experience with strategic planning, budget management, and cross-functional collaboration at the director level
  • Strong communication skills with ability to present technical concepts to executive stakeholders

Technical Expertise

  • Extensive hands-on experience (8+ years) with AI/ML tools and technologies for deploying and maintaining models that can process data in batch and/or real-time (e.g. Modelbit, MLflow, Kubeflow)
  • Deep expertise in developing, deploying and operating ML models in production environments at scale
  • Expert-level programming skills in Python and familiarity with other relevant languages
  • Extensive experience with data platform tools and technologies (e.g. Snowflake, Airflow, dbt, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with rapid development using AI code editors/agents (e.g. Cursor) and ability to drive adoption across teams
  • Experience working in Agile environments with continuous delivery practices
  • Proven ability to build diverse teams and create inclusive environments where all voices are heard and respecte

What’s Nice to Have

  • Experience working with LLM model provider APIs (e.g. OpenAI, Gemini, Claude) and managing vendor relationships
  • Hands-on experience with agentic application development (prompt engineering, context engineering, RAG, fine-tuning) and leading teams in these areas
  • Experience working with data under HIPAA requirements and healthcare compliance
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and infrastructure-as-code
  • Background in healthcare technology or regulated industries
