About ON’s Communications Team:

The Communications Team develops ON’s communications strategy, manages the firm’s brand, external relations, and digital presence.  The team also partners with the Programs and Policy team to develop campaigns and strategies for narrative storytelling that advance the organization’s impact goals.

About the Role:

In this role you will manage core communications functions; lead the execution of ON’s editorial calendar, media relations strategy, and events; support executive presence and visibility; work with ON grantees and partners in raising their visibility and drive internal communications. You’ll also partner with the Head of Communications and the Programs and Policy team on strategic campaigns and thought leadership. Working within a dynamic, 2–3-person communications team, you will build ON’s visibility, voice, and influence with a diverse range of audiences, including policymakers, peer funders, civil society organizations, tech and business leaders, media and cultural influencers, staff, board members, and other key partners.

Reporting to the Head of Communications, this role will also have significant engagement with the CEO, Senior Vice President, Programs and Policy, and the Chief Operating Officer.

*This role may be filled at the Senior Manager or Director level, depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

How You’ll Contribute to Our Impact:

Manage day-to-day execution of ON’s communications strategy

  • Develop and implement communications initiatives that establish ON’s market positioning, strengthen its reputation, and influence discourse on critical technology issues
  • Implement a brand strategy that differentiates ON and positions the firm as a preeminent voice in tech and philanthropy
  • Devise ways to compellingly tell the story of our mission and our work, communicating to diverse audiences how we work to strengthen societal governance of tech, and ensure more people have agency to shape how tech impacts their lives
  • Own and direct digital communications channels, including website, social media platforms, newsletters, podcasts, and emerging digital touchpoints
  • Design and implement measurement frameworks that help the team track return on investment and make strategic tradeoffs
  • Manage and supervise vendor relationships with agencies and consultants

Executive Visibility and Presence

  • Manage and execute executive visibility programs that position ON’s CEO and senior staff as authoritative voices at the intersection of technology and social impact
  • Lead event preparation, execution and follow up for the CEO – supporting preparations and logistics for all major external forums, briefing of the principal, planning for key side meetings, and development of talking points and/or speeches

Media Relations, Strategic Events and Media Partnerships

  • Manage inbound media inquiries
  • Design and execute high-impact events, including flagship convenings, industry conferences, and exclusive stakeholder gatherings that advance organizational priorities
  • Lead strategic sponsorship opportunities
  • Manage a rolling annual calendar of external forums and events at the intersection of technology, politics, and markets, and develop a strategy and plan for ON’s presence 

Programmatic Communications and Campaigns

  • Collaborate with members of the Programs and Policy team to amplify and elevate the work of our grantees and partners via ON communications channels
  • Support the launch and promotion of new programmatic initiatives and strategic partnerships
  • Work with the Head of Communications, executive team, and the Programs and Policy team to design and implement integrated campaigns that advance firm influence goals, drive engagement, and support the work of our partners

Internal Communications

  • Develop internal communications that support organizational clarity and culture, including monthly All-Hands meetings
  • Serve as part of internal working groups focused on strengthening organizational culture and employee engagement
  • Support ON’s CEO with talking points and presentations for key moments

Location:

ON is currently operating in a hybrid capacity, with employees working in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This position will be based out of our San Francisco office. Employees must reside within 100 miles of their assigned office location.

Candidates must have a current U.S. work authorization to be considered. ON does not sponsor or provide support for visas or work authorization, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, and other temporary work authorization programs.

Compensation:

This is a full-time, salaried position that features competitive pay and benefits, including health care (medical/dental/vision), paid time off, and a generous employer 401(k) contribution. The salary range for this role is $195,800 - $244,800 for the Senior Manager level and $220,300 -$275,400 for the Director level in San Francisco. ON manages pay equity seriously and new hires generally start at the midpoint of this range.

What You'll Bring to the Team:

Experience and Expertise

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in strategic communications, with experience in one or more of the following: technology, philanthropy, social impact, or agency roles
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in political and policy communications, exposure to government, private sector government relations, or the nonprofit/advocacy sector is a plus
  • Expertise spanning brand management, media relations, digital strategy, content, and campaign management
  • Demonstrated experience managing external communications agencies and partners, providing strategic direction, overseeing deliverables, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals
  • Strong ability to devise clear communications and influence goals, design strategies to reach key influence targets, and execute communications campaigns
  • Experience developing and implementing digital communications strategies and strategic events
  • Fluency in substantive issues in digital technology
  • Deep understanding of the evolving media and digital comms landscape, and skill in crafting messaging and campaigns to break through in crowded information environments
