NOTE: Candidates to be located in New York, NY metro area only as we are looking to build co-located clusters of employees that can meet in an office for collaboration and design. This is a hybrid role and we expect this hire to be in our New York City, New York Office at least 2 days a week. 

Who you are: 

Archipelago is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our growing labs team to work on Gen AI systems. We are looking for an engineer who is comfortable working with full stack development. We iterate quickly, build for the long term, and are looking for smart, independent engineers who want to apply their trade with like-minded people. 

As an example, here are some projects we have worked on in the last year. 

  • Building models that extract information from 100+page engineering documents. (LLMs + RAG pipelines) 
  • Building a process to send out low-confidence predictions for HITL review and then incorporating feedback to improve our models. 
  • Building an AI agent that can extract insurance information from PDFs, and format that into a standardized excel workbook. 
  • Defining and estimating the impact that our information extraction processes have on our client’s insurance portfolios 

Responsibilities 

  • Designing and developing machine learning and deep learning systems 
  • Building RAG pipelines with LLMs 
  • Building Agentic AI applications 
  • Design and implement tracking and evaluation tools to assess model performance and data accuracy. 
  • Implementing appropriate ML algorithms 
  • Orchestration of long running jobs for data extraction 
  • Building UIs to test & evaluate results of ML experiments 
  • Ship code to production frequently 
  • Coach and mentor more junior engineers 

Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or similar role. 
  • Familiarity working with modern NLP techniques: (LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG frameworks, AI Agents) 
  • Fluent in Python and SQL 
  • Knowledge of how to deploy, monitor and maintain ML services in a production environment (AWS, CI/CD, Datadog, Snowflake) 
  • Experience in designing and deploying feature engineering pipelines in production 

 Bonus Points: 

  • 5+ years experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or similar role 
  • Experience building applications for the insurance industry. 
  • Experience in evaluating machine learning techniques in B2B context. 
  • Familiarity with job orchestration frameworks (e.g Airflow, but especially Flyte) 
  • Familiarity with MLOps (Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon Sagemaker, AWS Lambda) 
  • Experience building data ingestion pipelines 
  • Experience with vector databases (e.g. qdrant, Pinecone) 
  • Familiarity with building lightweight front-end apps. (gradio, streamlit, dash) 
  • Experience with Go 
  • Experience with working with human in the loop review processes
