ABOUT THE ROLE

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for all financial matters of the organization and its affiliate organizations including grants management and operations support.  The CFO also has oversight of internal IT ensuring the organization has the right support and systems in place to do their jobs. 

The CFO will serve as a hands-on financial leader with responsibility for broad oversight and stewardship of the assets of the organization and will serve as a strategic business partner to the leadership team to collaboratively develop and implement scalable systems and organizational structure to support the overall strategic plan.

The CFO will report to and work closely with the CEO and report into the Board Audit and Finance Committee. The incumbent will provide strategic financial leadership and will collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategies across the organization. They must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and multiple, competing deadline-oriented workplace while leading a finance staff, and working closely with the other Operations leaders (General Counsel and Chief People Officer).

The CFO must have knowledge of the laws, procedures, and regulations relating to non-profit accounting and financial reporting, and in particular those pertaining to U.S. tax-exempt organizations recognized under Sections 501(c)(3) and 501(c) (4) of the Internal Revenue Code.  They must have experience managing multiple grants and set up appropriate grant financial tracking systems and processes. 

This forward-leaning individual will also assure the financial viability of the organization through proactive analysis and sound administration of policies and procedures. They will ensure excellence in a decentralized, worldwide operation to control all fiscal activities in numerous countries in an effective and efficient manner. We are seeking a strong financial professional to provide overall financial leadership to a multi-million-dollar global organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management and Administration

  • Oversee day-to-day financial management and administration in a fast-paced, global environment, covering all areas of finance such as accounts payable and disbursements, contracts approval, corporate credit card administration, cash receipts, cash flow, North America and global payroll processing, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Lead a team of 18 professionals, including 5 direct reports; develop, train, motivate the finance staff; collaborate with SLT.
  • Oversee the treasury function including cash flow among all entities including organization’s lines of credit.
  • Ensure that the organization’s financial resources are effectively managed to maximize returns while managing risk.
  • Work with  Audit and Finance committee to monitor financial health, operating, short and long-term reserves, and ensure compliance with investment policy.
  • Work with leadership to manage costs and ensure effective, efficient and transparent use of resources.
  • Manage organization’s foreign exchange exposure; work with external broker to analyze and make recommendations to Audit and Finance committee on the execution of foreign exchange policy.
  • Support finance team in the development and maintenance of internal control systems, and development of and adherence to organization’s global accounting policies and procedures.
  • Assess and evaluate business, budget and financial processes and procedures; identify and implement opportunities for improvement; continually assess finance information systems, software packages, and technologies.
  • Provide effective stewardship of funder contributions to the organization and prepare all financial and grant reports in a timely and effective manner.
  • Represent the organization and serve as primary point of contact with financial stakeholders, including organization and Affiliates’ Audit and Finance committee, Boards of Directors, external auditors, tax preparers, treasury service representatives, and investment advisors
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to all governing bodies for all entities.  
  • Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the SLT.

Budgeting and Financial Planning

  • Lead the team on the following:
  • Direct and coordinate preparation and execution of global annual budget, aligning limited resources with strategic objectives and global annual and department plans.
  • Work with budget holders to regularly monitor department and program budgets and adjust expenditures in line with revenue forecasts.
  • Present the global annual budget for review by SLT and approval by the Audit and Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with development staff to prepare and monitor revenue forecast and accounts receivable collections.
  • Work with development staff to develop grant budgets, track spending against and produce grant reports.
  • Develop long-term financial business plans, modeling forecasts.

Financial Reporting

  • Oversee preparation of regular, timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for all of organization’s entities; present financial reports to senior management, Boards of Directors and other key stakeholders in a manner that is clear, concise, and allows for timely decision-making.
  • Evaluate on a pro-active basis the organization’s financial position, issuing monthly reports on cash, revenues, and expenses.
  • Oversee annual financial statement audits for the organization and its affiliates.

Compliance

  • Remain current on regulations, industry trends and practices, and relevant financial reporting laws; ensure organization operates within full compliance of the laws in the countries in which it works; consult with external auditors, tax preparers, and internal corporate and outside legal counsel on relevant matters.
  • Ensure ORGANIZATION ’s compliance with IRS rules for 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations, including accounting for cost-sharing arrangements among all related entities.
  • Oversee filings of ORGNAIZATION’s annual IRS Form 990 and 990-T, with unrelated business income tax considerations; oversee filing of DC Form D-20 and global tax requirements.
  • Support ORGANIZATIONS’s state charitable registrations.

Grant Management

  • Enable the proper systems and tools (for example timesheets) to properly track and report on grant work, especially for restricted grants.
  • Guide team to produce world-class reports with appropriate messaging to our major donors.

IT Management

  • Oversee outsourced IT provider and provide escalation for urgent IT issues.
  • Provide oversight on systems and tools and carefully manage the IT and Digital budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS

The CFO will be a leader with at least 12-15 years of broad finance experience, gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. They will ideally have experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, payroll and reporting) for a complex global nonprofit with multiple funding sources and an affiliate structure with diverse program areas delivered nationally and internationally.

Education/Certification

  • Strong academic credentials, including an advanced degree in finance or a related field, are preferred.
  • CPA designation with public accounting experience or MBA preferred.

Required Experience and Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of accounting, financial reporting under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, budgeting, modeling and forecasting, treasury and investments, audit, tax, strategic planning, internal controls, enterprise risk management, data analytics, payroll and accounting systems and multiple currencies and conversion.
  • Knowledge of laws, procedures and regulations relating to US tax exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) with a related 501(c)(4) affiliate operating under a cost-sharing or other shared services agreements.
  • Experience managing the finances of a complex international entity with multiple global locations and foreign exchange matters, highly preferred.
  • Experience managing and tracking restricted grants.
  • Tax-exempt reporting requirements, compliance and financial statement auditing activities.
  • Long range planning and budgeting with a diversified donor base and multiple currency environment.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills with demonstrated success preparing and presenting to Executive and the Board.
  • Broad tax and audit knowledge.
  • Prior 3 years’ experience as CFO or VP of Finance or financial leadership experience, including at least 12 plus years of financial management is strongly preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:Fluency in English required. Proficiency in other languages such as French and German is a plus.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: ONE offers competitive compensation and an exceptional benefits package along with the opportunity to contribute to worldwide causes impacting those most in need. The base salary range for this role is $225,000 - $275,000.
