Position Objective:
The Vice President, Development develops and implements the company’s DG and large utility solar and storage project development strategy for West Region markets and manages the Director and team implementing the strategy across geographic sub-regions and market segments. This role works cohesively and collaboratively across company-wide functional teams to include Real Estate, Engineering, Preconstruction, Delivery, Finance, Legal and Systems. The position reports to the CEO while expanding and maturing a pipeline of profitable projects to meet company goals.
Responsibilities:
- Participating in creating and curating the company’s overall strategic direction and goals with direct responsibility for achieving departmental and regional goals and key results to support origination, advancement, and monetization of projects in the West region in collaboration with the VP of Commercial Strategy, the Director and the West team.
- Serving as a portfolio manager to assess relative risk-weighted rewards and establishing priorities for capital and resource planning across an array of potential opportunities.
- Collaborating internally and externally with a goal to expand relationships with prospective utility and non-utility energy or REC customers as well as financiers or buyers of solar and/or storage assets.
- Advising or supporting strategy leads and project managers to achieve development milestones while employing a streamlined, efficient, and structured process to manage and mitigate risk and avoid potential pitfalls in the development process (e.g., conducting diligence reviews, site visits, communications with stakeholders, preparing internal approval requests or memos, RFP submissions, and review of financial model and forecasts).
- Promoting and enabling internal collaboration within and across departments and seamless handoffs as projects advance in maturity from development to construction, financing, sale, operations and/or ownership.
- Providing mentorship and serving as a key connector within and across the development team and company, fostering growth of internal institutional knowledge, a collaborative team-wide and company-wide culture and work environment with open communication, emphasis on holistic learning and information sharing within and across teams and regional offices
Requirements:
- 10+ years in progressively responsible renewable energy development and/or origination roles, preferably in solar power with experience and relationships with utility and non-utility customers across the West and Pacific Northwest regions
- A deep understanding of all aspects of solar energy project development, including various solar technologies, state, federal and local policies, land/title and mineral rights, permit processes and conditions, design and utility interconnection requirements, commercial contracts, financial models and transactions.
- Proven experience successfully leading teams and managing people (including remote/virtual supervision) with a proactive style in tackling new markets, developing talent, and managing internal and external resources.
- Ability to build and manage complex project budgets and hold team members accountable to meeting budgets and profitability targets.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization and with staff at remote locations essential.
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required; graduate degree in related field of study preferred.
- Excellent PC computer skills and familiarity with MS Office and Windows, including intermediate level MS Excel skills.
- Strong attention to detail with a high level of integrity and organizational capacity to manage multiple projects.
- Creative problem-solving skills matched with strength in executing under pressure and with continuous change.
- Self-motivated with proven ability to take ownership, initiative, and accountability.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to contribute to an amicable working environment with other associates and employees.
- Demonstrated qualities of integrity, credibility, fiduciary, and professional responsibility.
- Position requires frequent travel, up to 25% of working time. Must carry an active driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
