
Staff Software Engineer, Developer Productivity

Are you passionate about empowering developers and streamlining the software development lifecycle? Do you thrive on optimizing processes, building robust tooling, and fostering a seamless developer experience? We're seeking a talented, experienced and self-starting Staff Software Engineer to join as a founding member of our Developer Productivity team. In this pivotal role, you’ll report directly to the VP of Engineering, and you will be instrumental in shaping the way our engineering teams build, test, deploy, and monitor software, directly impacting their efficiency, satisfaction, and ultimately, the success of our products.
What You'll Do:
- Optimize CI/CD Pipelines: Design, implement, and maintain highly efficient, scalable, and reliable CI/CD pipelines across various services and applications. This includes identifying bottlenecks, introducing automation, and leveraging best practices to accelerate delivery cycles.
- Configure & Maintain Developer Tooling: Evaluate, integrate, and optimize a wide array of developer tools and platforms, ensuring they are well-configured, performant, and meet the evolving needs of our engineering teams. This could include source control systems, IDE extensions, code analysis tools, artifact repositories, and more.
- Datadog Monitoring & Alerting: Architect, implement, and manage comprehensive monitoring and alerting solutions within Datadog for our development and production environments. This includes defining key metrics, creating insightful dashboards, setting up effective alerts, and collaborating with engineering teams to interpret data and troubleshoot issues.
- Improve Developer Workflows: Identify pain points and opportunities for improvement in the end-to-end developer workflow, from local development setups to production deployments. Propose and implement solutions that enhance developer productivity and reduce cognitive load.
- Build Internal Tools & Services: Develop and maintain internal tools, scripts, and services that automate repetitive tasks, provide self-service capabilities, and enhance the overall developer experience.
- Promote Best Practices: Champion and educate engineering teams on best practices for software development, testing, deployment, and operational excellence.
- Troubleshoot & Support: Provide expert support and troubleshooting for developer tooling, CI/CD issues, and production incidents related to our platform.
- Collaboration & Communication: Collaborate closely with engineering teams, SRE, and product management to understand their needs, gather feedback, and ensure our developer platform aligns with company goals.
- Stay Current: Continuously research and evaluate new technologies, tools, and industry trends related to developer experience and productivity, advocating for their adoption where appropriate.
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in software development, DevOps, or a related platform engineering role, with a strong focus on developer productivity.
- Proven expertise in designing, implementing, and optimizing CI/CD pipelines (e.g., using Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Azure DevOps, Spinnaker).
- Deep understanding and hands-on experience with developer tooling and ecosystems (e.g., Git, Docker, Kubernetes, various programming language build tools, static analysis tools).
- Extensive experience with monitoring and alerting platforms, particularly Datadog, including dashboarding, alert configuration, and custom metric integration.
- Proficiency in at least one scripting language (e.g., Python, Go, Bash).
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and infrastructure-as-code principles (Terraform, CloudFormation) is highly desirable.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for optimizing complex systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse technical teams.
- A proactive and empathetic approach to improving the developer experience.
Bonus Points If You Have:
- Experience with large-scale distributed systems.
- Familiarity with container orchestration technologies (Kubernetes).
- Contributions to open-source projects related to developer tools or platforms.
- Experience in a rapidly scaling organization.
