ABOUT onX

As a pioneer in digital outdoor navigation with a suite of apps, onX was founded in Montana, which in turn has inspired our mission to awaken the adventurer inside everyone. With more than 400 employees located around the country working in largely remote / hybrid roles, we have created regional “Basecamps” to help remote employees find connection and inspiration with other onXers. We bring our outdoor passion to work every day, coupling it with industry-leading technology to craft dynamic outdoor experiences.

Through multiple years of growth, we haven’t lost our entrepreneurial ethos at onX. We offer a fast-paced, growing, tech-forward environment where ownership, accountability, and passion for winning as a team are essential. We value diversity and believe it leads to different perspectives and inspires both new adventures and new growth. As a team, we’re hungry to improve, value innovation, and believe great ideas come from any direction.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

onX is seeking a Geospatial Analyst III who will contribute to meaningful, real-world outcomes that have a lasting impact for customers and the business. In this role, you’ll focus on the Fish vertical, and play a critical role as part of the Geospatial team, ensuring Fish-related geospatial content moves reliably through onX systems and into customers’ hands. You’ll take ownership of your work, collaborate closely with partners across the organization, and help move initiatives forward in an environment where priorities evolve, learning is celebrated, and you’re encouraged to keep stretching your skills.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Essential Job Duties & Functions

  • Serve as the Geospatial Analyst supporting the Fish vertical, supporting the technical approach, sequencing, and delivery of geospatial work defined by the Fish Geospatial Project Manager.
  • Execute geospatial work that supports connected content initiatives by implementing datasets and workflows that enable Fish content to be used consistently across multiple product features and experiences.
  • Support content trust initiatives by identifying opportunities to strengthen QC checks and quality gates within Fish data pipelines, proactively suggesting and helping implement process improvements alongside senior analysts. Execute targeted audits, refreshes, and cleanup of Fish datasets as needed, applying technical judgment to determine which datasets should be updated, replaced, or retired.
  • Leverage existing geospatial pipelines and contribute to the improvement and development of new processes as needed, ensuring reliable delivery of data from source systems into customer-facing products and services.
  • Support complex geospatial processing and analysis such as multi-source data integration, conflation, and large-scale QA/QC, applying expert judgment to resolve ambiguity and edge cases.
  • Use Claude Code and other AI tools to generate, optimize, and automate geospatial workflows, including feature extraction, segmentation, classification, conflation, and QA.
  • Proactively identify improvement opportunities in conflation workflows for multi-source polygon integration and communicate recommendations to the Fish Geospatial Project Manager, Content Systems Product Managers, and Engineers.
  • Analyze data, create dashboards, and monitor data health metrics to provide insights that inform the team on project status.
  • Identify gaps in Fish data sources, making recommendations for new sources or improvements to existing ones.
  • Partner closely with senior Geospatial Analysts and Engineers to refine and optimize data acquisition and processing approaches, ensuring geospatial solutions are performant, maintainable, and aligned with the business roadmap.
  • Use version control (Git) and collaborative workflows to drive consistency and repeatability across the broader Geospatial team.
  • Provide technical guidance and informal mentorship to other Geospatial Specialists as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently about workflow ideas, risks, and progress to cross-functional partners.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geospatial, Geospatial Engineering, Computer Science, Hydrology, Geography, or related field; or equivalent technical experience.
  • 3+ years of geospatial industry experience, including dataset sourcing, development, transformation, and deployment.
  • Proficient in QGIS and advanced geoprocessing techniques.
  • Proficient with SQL, cloud-based analytical databases (e.g., BigQuery), PostGIS, spatial indexing, and performance optimization.
  • Strong Python skills, including experience with GDAL, geopandas, PyQGIS, and automation frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate within complex spatial data pipelines, conflation systems, using version control (Git), and collaborative workflows to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions.
  • Proven ability to use Claude Code or other AI coding assistants to generate scripts, automate tasks, and accelerate spatial workflows.
  • Familiarity with sourcing and processing Fish-relevant datasets such as waterbodies, fisheries surveys, bathymetry, and boat ramps.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously on complex, ambiguous projects, bringing structure, clarity, and execution rigor to ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based storage, Airflow, and Docker.
  • Permanent US work authorization is a condition of employment with onX.
  • Ability to travel bi-annually for multiple days to a corporate office or other onX strategic location, such as a Basecamp.

ADDED BONUSES

Though not required, we would be thrilled to consider candidates with any of the following:

  • Master's degree in Geospatial, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Experience working with modern geospatial data formats such as GeoParquet for scalable storage and processing.
  • Experience building micro-services or distributed workflows for spatial data.

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
