Meet your Future Neighbors
As a Software Engineer with Nextdoor, Inc. (San Francisco, CA) you’ll:
- Develop and maintain scalable backend systems in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Work with data storage systems (e.g., PostgreSQL) and messaging systems (e.g., SQS) to build data processing pipelines and monitoring solutions.
- Develop and maintain automated unit and integration tests to ensure system reliability and team productivity.
- Design and optimize database schemas; write and tune SQL queries to support feature development and reporting needs.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to plan and deliver user-facing features, including reviewing product requirements, aligning on interface design, integrating with experimentation platforms, and coordinating cross-team testing and launch.
- Write and maintain backend code using Python and relevant frameworks (e.g., Django); understand and extend existing systems to improve code quality through testing and automation.
- Utilize RESTful APIs and structured data interfaces (e.g., Protobuf) to integrate with internal and external systems.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including code implementation, review, deployment, monitoring, and production support.
What You’ll Bring to The House
- Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or closely related field.
- Five (5) years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in the position offered, as a Software Engineer, or closely related position.
- Alternatively, will accept a Master’s degree and three (3) years of experience in the above positions. Any suitable combination of education, training, or experience is acceptable.
- Must have Must have experience in the following: Experience working across the full software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment, and production support, using Python and at least one modern programming language (e.g., Go, Java, or C++), as demonstrated in previous roles; Scripting languages such as Bash or Python for service deployment, system monitoring, and data migration tasks; Experience building and maintaining web services using RESTful APIs or structured data interfaces such as Protocol Buffers or Thrift; Experience with relational and non-relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MongoDB, including schema design and performance tuning; Messaging systems such as SQS, Kafka, or RabbitMQ, and related monitoring tools for ensuring data pipeline reliability; Experience with testing and quality assurance practices, including writing unit tests, integration tests, and participating in code reviews; Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure to deploy and operate backend services; and Experience collaborating with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to plan, implement, and iterate on production features and experimentation.

The starting salary for this role is expected to be: $213,512/year.
We also expect to award a meaningful equity grant for this role. With equal quarterly vesting, your first vest date would be within the first 3 months of your start date.
Overall, total compensation will vary depending on your relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
