Position Description

The Manager ESS Commissioning position, reporting to the Director, Commissioning & Testing will oversee all aspects of ESS plant commissioning including interconnection, site work, safety, startup and commissioning, and project close out. This position will be focused on management and oversight of all EPC ESS activities related to ESS construction coordination, commissioning, start up, sync, testing and commencement of commercial operations. 

The Manager ESS Commissioning is a regular, full-time position, and is eligible for our generous employee benefits package, including employer paid health insurance, paid time off, a 401(k) plan with employer matching contributions, and other great benefits.

Key Responsibilities

  • This position will interface with Project Management, Engineering, Construction, Contractors, Integrators, PV Commissioning, Operations and Off-takers to direct and coordinate ESS commissioning for all Origis ESS Projects.
  • This position will oversee field commissioning activities and processes performed by EPC contractors, primarily focused on BESS systems, but also potentially including Solar Field, Substation, Inverter, Tracker, Transformer, Meteorological station, Performance Instruments, SCADA, and Point of Interconnection related utility testing.
  • Coordinate and track commissioning activities between the EPC, BESS supplier, SCADA supplier and other entities as needed.
  • Identify potential scope gaps between the BESS supplier’s commissioning process, and the commissioning process of the EPC.
  • Review ESS equipment factory and field-testing reports.
  • Review ESS commissioning plans, testing procedures, and test report templates.
  • Review EPC contractor’s Switching Order, LOTO and Commissioning Log.
  • Oversee preparation and scheduling of ESS performance tests and review of results. 
  • Participate in review of electrical drawings, electrical specifications, calculations, and studies; Review of electrical studies including but not limited to load flow, reactive power capability, short circuit, relay coordination and arch flash.
  • Demonstrate clear understanding of plant output optimization, LOTO, testing and commissioning procedures.
  • Provide technical and operational support in the installation, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment and systems.
  • Translate technical issues and remediation plans to high level reports for senior management.
  • Work with Interconnection team on review and submission of interconnection, performance and testing requirements with utility and ISOs.
  • Review contractual exhibits for commission scope of work for subcontracts.
  • Integrate commissioning procedures and documentation with Fulcrum to improve efficiency of processes and ensure proper archival of commissioning documentation.
  • Work with Project Managers, Site reps to review & Owners Engineers all ESS Commissioning documentation submitted by sub-contractors and resolve any issues.
  • Provide guidance to Site Reps as it relates to quality inspections and ESS support.
  • Develop and maintain ESS I&C standard documentation, such as: scope of work instructions, training, quality & safety requirements, etc.
  • Provide feedback from field experience to Owners Engineers, Engineering and Technology teams so trends can be determined, and product improvements can be implemented.
  • Develop and review project specific commissioning and testing plans.

 Key Attributes for Success

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to engage and cooperate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to carry out tasks and provide practical support throughout the commissioning and ramp-up phase of all projects.
  • Familiar with all Testing and ESS Standards (NETA, IEEE, IEC etc.) and testing requirements for Electrical Equipment in Storage Systems, Substations and PV Plants.
  • General knowledge of construction principles and processes
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Strong work ethic and desire to work in a team environment.
  • Understanding of Substation, Energy Storage system construction, and Plant Performance analysis.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and coordinate the correction of any fault or deficiency.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Proven leadership skills in challenging environments.
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work comfortably in potentially remote field conditions and manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E and NEC and safe electrical work practices.
  • Knowledge of safety standards, including OSHA standards, and best practices for construction job site safety. Strong understanding of electrical safety, including arc flash hazards and proper LOTO techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical field (engineering, physics, math, statistics, renewables or similar) preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of professional experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in ESS commissioning.
  • Experience in operation and construction within the solar industry strongly preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of solar power generation.
