Senior Director, Data Science

Hi, we're Oscar. We're hiring a Senior Director, Data Science to join our Data Science team.

About the role:

The Senior Director, Data Science, is a pivotal leader responsible for defining and executing the strategic vision for advanced modeling and analytics programs. They lead multiple, high-impact teams in developing innovative data science solutions that drive key strategic initiatives across the business, directly supporting Oscar's long-term goals. This role acts as a primary thought leader and influential voice within their domain and across the entire data organization.

You will report into the VP, Data.

Work Location: This position is based in either our New York City office, Los Angeles office, Tempe Office, or can sit remotely in San Fransisco, Boston, Dallas, or Atlanta markets. If you live in the NYC, LA, or Tempe markets, this will be a hybrid work schedule with 3 days of in-office work per week. Thursdays are a required in-office day for team meetings and events, while your other two office days are flexible to suit your schedule. #LI-Hybrid

Pay Transparency: The base pay for this role is: $240,120- $315,158 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program, company equity grants, and annual performance bonuses.

Responsibilities:

• Defines and champions the strategic roadmap for their domain, translating complex company-wide goals into actionable plans, tactics, and resource allocation. Plays a critical role on the department's senior leadership team, significantly influencing overall team strategy, operational excellence, scope definition, and cultural development.
• Leads and manages multiple, potentially larger, and/or more complex teams of data scientists and/or analysts, including managers and potentially managers of managers. Fosters talent development and succession planning within their teams.
• Influences, partners, and negotiates at the executive level with senior data and business leaders across diverse and critical areas of the organization to align data science initiatives with enterprise objectives.
• Oversees the strategic direction and delivery of cutting-edge solutions, guiding teams that research, develop, and maintain advanced data pipelines, sophisticated statistical/ML models, and complex analytical frameworks.
• Drives enterprise-wide delivery of complex data science solutions through strategic organizational design, cross-functional advocacy, advanced systems architecture, comprehensive program management, and senior-level mentorship.
• Champion a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the data science department, among key stakeholders, and across the broader organization, setting standards for best practices.
• Act as a senior advocate and ambassador for the data science organization, proactively communicating their strategic contributions, resource needs, and impact to executive leadership and other departments to ensure high-level visibility, strategic alignment, and significant organizational buy-in.

Requirements:

• 12+ years of progressive industry experience or other quantitative technical fields (which may include academia), with a significant portion in a leadership capacity.
• 8+ years of work experience working with SQL, R, and/or Python to query, manipulate and analyze large, complex datasets.
• 8+ years experience building advanced data models, using sophisticated analytics methods, robust statistical modeling, and/or large-scale data processing.
• 5+ years of progressive people management experience, including managing managers.

Bonus points:

• Master's or Ph.D. in a quantitative or technical field.
• Extensive experience in the healthcare, finance, and/or insurance industries, preferably within a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Pay Transparency:  Final offer amounts, within the base pay set forth above, are determined by factors including your relevant skills, education, and experience.
