Hardware Prototyping Engineer
Hardware Prototyping Engineer
About Otto Aerospace
OTTO is developing the world’s first fifth-generation business jet, designed for sustainability through the innovative use of advanced super-laminar aerodynamics and high-precision, net-shaped composites. Flight tests of our technology demonstrator validate a dramatic reduction in fuel burn and allow a sizeable improvement in cabin comfort. Otto Aerospace is designing world-class aircraft from first principles physics and delivering ground-breaking aircraft and economic performance.
About the Role
As a Hardware Prototyping Engineer at Otto Aerospace, you will play a critical hands-on role in bringing our SuperNatural Vision Infotainment System from concept to reality. You will be responsible for assembling physical mockups and prototypes, operating and maintaining 3D printers and other fabrication equipment, and managing the day-to-day operations of our hardware lab space. Working closely with hardware engineers, mechanical engineers, and designers, you will help translate CAD models and engineering drawings into tangible prototypes that enable rapid iteration and testing. You will ensure the lab remains organized, well-stocked, and safe, while supporting multiple concurrent engineering projects. This role requires strong hands-on technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced development environment.
The SuperNatural Vision (SNV) team at Otto Aerospace is dedicated to developing cutting-edge cabin interior systems that enhance the in-flight experience for passengers. Our team is responsible for the design, development, and integration of the SuperNatural Vision Infotainment System, including all hardware, software, and AI/ML engineering.
What You'll Do
- Assemble and build physical mockups, prototypes, and test fixtures from engineering drawings, CAD models, and verbal instructions to support hardware development and design validation.
- Operate and maintain 3D printers and other fabrication equipment (laser cutters, hand tools, soldering stations, etc.), including material management, print queue coordination, and equipment troubleshooting.
- Manage lab inventory and supplies, ensuring tools, materials, components, and safety equipment are properly stocked, organized, and accessible to the engineering team.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe lab environment, implementing and enforcing lab safety protocols, equipment maintenance schedules, and workspace organization standards.
- Support engineering testing activities by setting up test fixtures, preparing hardware samples, documenting build processes, and assisting with basic measurements and data collection.
- Coordinate lab space usage among multiple engineering teams and projects, scheduling equipment access and ensuring efficient workflow in a shared workspace.
- Document prototype builds, fabrication procedures, and lessons learned to support design improvements and knowledge sharing across the team.
Who You Are
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related field, or equivalent work/industry experience.
Experience
- 2+ years of relevant experience in a lab, manufacturing, prototyping, or technical support role in aviation, robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, or related industries.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping and fabrication techniques, including 3D printing (FDM, SLA, or similar), basic machining, assembly operations, and working from technical drawings or CAD models.
- Experience with basic electronics assembly, soldering, wire harnessing, and mechanical assembly of prototypes or test fixtures.
- Familiarity with lab safety practices, equipment maintenance, inventory management, and workspace organization in a technical or engineering environment.
- Passion for aviation and building high-quality hardware systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with engineers and cross-functional teams, take direction effectively, and manage multiple concurrent tasks in a fast-paced development environment.
Required Skills
- Proficiency with 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLA, or similar) including slicing software, printer operation, troubleshooting, and post-processing techniques.
- Strong hands-on skills in mechanical assembly, basic electronics work (soldering, wire crimping, connector assembly), and the ability to read and work from technical drawings, assembly instructions, and CAD models.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for managing lab inventory, maintaining equipment, documenting builds, and keeping shared workspaces clean and functional.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities with a proactive, safety-conscious approach to lab operations and the flexibility to support multiple engineering teams and shifting project priorities.
Where You'll Be
This role is based in Costa Mesa, CA.
