Engineering Manager

Remote - United States

Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped 2.5 million people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.

Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.

Our engineering organization consists of many talented developers distributed across the EU and US. For day-to-day feature work, our engineers are organized into smaller cross-functional feature teams, each team owning a distinct domain. Our teams have a great deal of autonomy and are responsible for the development and architecture of their features. Teams take full ownership of their code and handle everything from concepting, design and implementation to release, maintenance and bug fixes.

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced Engineer Manager in the US to support our new Context team. This team is responsible for understanding Oura members’ context, enabling better personalization of the Oura experience. In addition to a product manager, the team consists of mobile and backend developers as well as data scientists.

As an engineering manager, you will build and manage a team of talented engineers and take pride in coaching and guiding them through their careers. You and your team will own the team’s systems and features, and deliver against an ambitious roadmap that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with personalization.

Context is a technically challenging domain, affecting many of Oura’s systems. In this role, in addition to acting as a line manager, you will be hands-on with the system design work, working together with the team’s product manager, data scientists and engineers to design scalable solutions that fit into Oura’s holistic architecture. You will manage complex engineering projects and drive them to completion.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of AI-driven health insights in a fast-evolving domain, backed by a strong consumer product and massive dataset.

Location: This is a remote U.S. role with a preference for candidates based on the East Coast. This role involves regular collaboration with ŌURA colleagues in Finland and across the US. Applicants should expect recurring early morning meetings with occasional later engagements to align with global time zones.  Our main US office is in San Francisco and a second one is in San Diego. We also have employee hubs in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, and more, which gives employees an opportunity to gather informally for occasional local co-working.

What you will do:

  • Manage a team of engineers to design, build, ship, and maintain the services and features owned by the team.
  • Oversee and manage technical, cross-functional projects, collaborating globally.
  • Contribute to the planning and scoping of critical projects and own the execution and delivery of engineering efforts.
  • Work closely with Product, Design, Data Science and other teams across the organization.
  • Mentor your team to develop their skills and foster professional growth.
  • Provide technical leadership to your team; while you may no longer write code, you are still deeply technical and will contribute to, and sometimes lead, technical discussions.
  • Evaluate trade-offs and make sound technical decisions that impact entire projects.
  • Champion engineering excellence and drive continuous improvement.
  • Act as the hiring manager for new developers in the team.

Requirements

We would love to have you on our team if you have:

  • Minimum of 6+ years experience in software engineering and 2+ years managing software engineers.
  • Strong technical background in software engineering, with the ability to help guide architectural decisions.
  • Experience shipping consumer mobile apps or their backend services.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum processes and ability to advocate for process improvements.
  • Passion for building inclusive, high-performing teams, with a track record of mentoring engineers and supporting career growth.
  • Enjoy working in a mission-driven start-up environment with an ability to handle ambiguity.
  • Strong communication, project management, and delegation skills. Able to drive cross-functional projects from inception to product launch.
  • Strong people management skills. You proudly recognize achievements and successes and also do not hesitate to provide constructive feedback. You are open to feedback and have a growth mindset.
  • Able to maintain a good work-life balance both for yourself and your team. You understand the significance of promoting well-being, managing workload, and creating an environment that supports a healthy balance between work responsibilities and personal life.
  • Thrive in an environment with many opportunities and high uncertainty.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Collaborative development experience working asynchronously with engineering teams in different countries, time zones, and cultures.
  • Experience building software that integrates machine learning models together with data scientists.
  • Experience with AWS.
  • Experience coordinating and delivering complex projects involving mobile, backend, data science and QA.
  • Experience delivering software products related to health, wellness, fitness, or hardware.
