Staff Technical Program Manager, Product Design (Mechanical)
Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped millions of people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.
Oura is seeking an experienced and highly strategic Staff Technical Program Manager (TPM) to join our Hardware Program Management group and lead key mechanical systems and components for NPI programs from Concept through mass production readiness. You will partner closely with mechanical engineering, industrial design, hardware, product, manufacturing, operations, quality and compliance to deliver robust, high-quality mechanical solutions.
Reporting directly to the Sr. Director, Hardware programs, this Staff-level role requires exceptional execution, the ability to drive technical excellence in mechanical design, anticipate risks early, and mentor others. If you excel at navigating complex hardware development throughout the full product lifecycle for mechanically intensive, integrated hardware systems, we’d like to hear from you.
What you will do:
- Lead Programs: Drive end-to-end delivery of complex mechanical subsystems and key product components (e.g., housings, mechanisms, interconnects, seals, structural frames, thermal solutions) from concept to production.
- Align Teams: Connect mechanical engineering, industrial design, hardware, product, operations, quality, and manufacturing; manage tradeoffs, resolve conflicts, and keep execution on track.
- Own Mechanical Readiness: Define and track mechanical milestones: concept exploration, design freeze, DFM/DFA, tooling readiness, validation builds.
- Plan & Execute: Build and maintain schedules and dependencies; identify risks early and drive mitigation across internal teams and external partners. Define and drive DOEs.
- Drive Technical Excellence: Guide decisions on materials, manufacturing processes, tolerance stack-ups, and reliability requirements with mechanical engineering leaders.
- Manage Vendors: In partnership with global sourcing, lead relationships with mechanical suppliers, toolmakers, and manufacturing partners; align on requirements, timelines, quality, and changes.
- Ensure Quality & Reliability: Partner with ME, reliability, and test to define and execute mechanical validation plans (e.g., environmental, drop, shock, fatigue, corrosion, wear, IP rating) and drive fast resolution of issues.
- Support NPI Builds: Coordinate mechanical readiness for prototype, EVT, DVT, and PVT; oversee build prep, defect tracking, and closure for mechanical issues. Attend NPI builds at manufacturing sites to support execution.
- Communicate Clearly: Deliver concise, tailored updates to executives and teams; create alignment on mechanical risks, decisions, and progress.
- Shape Practices: Define best practices for mechanical program execution, mentor senior team members, and foster a collaborative, detail-focused culture.
We would love to consider you for this role if you have:
- 10+ years managing full product lifecycle for complex mechanical and hardware products, from concept through mass production.
- Proven track record shipping mechanically sophisticated consumer electronics or hardware products in high-volume manufacturing.
- Strong Mechanical Engineering depth, with ability to engage on:
- Materials selection (e.g. metals, plastics, elastomers, ceramics, soft goods, coatings, surface finishes, etc)
- Manufacturing processes (e.g. injection molding, die casting, machining, stamping, extrusion, overmolding, additive, forming, joining, adhesives, welding, etc.)
- DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, GD&T, and mechanical reliability.
- Experience partnering with industrial design to balance aesthetics, ergonomics, robustness, and manufacturability.
- Demonstrated expertise in NPI prototyping, DOEs, validation builds, and ramp, including collaboration with CMs, ODMs, and mechanical suppliers.
- Strong track record of cross-functional work to turn requirements into shipped products.
- Excellent communicator with strong leadership, stakeholder management, and negotiation skills; comfortable presenting tradeoffs and recommendations at the executive level.
- Advanced PM tool proficiency (Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet, or similar) and experience optimizing workflows for complex hardware programs.
- Thrives in ambiguous, fast-moving, global environments.
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
- Passion for hardware product development, user-centric design, and building beautifully engineered products at scale.
Nice to have:
- Experience with miniaturized mechanical systems, wearables, or tightly packaged consumer electronics with stringent space, weight, and reliability constraints.
- Background in advanced materials (e.g., specialty alloys, composites, bio-compatible materials) and surface treatments/coatings for wearables.
- Familiarity with thermal management, environmental sealing (IP ratings), and long-term durability of materials in skin-contact or harsh environments.
- Experience with global mechanical manufacturing and supply chains, including tooling, process capability (CP/CPK), and yield improvement.
Note: Up to 25% global travel may be required for this position.
