Junior Software Engineer

Tijuana, Mexico

Company Overview

Join us for an enriching journey with Outset, a trailblazing medical device company that is revolutionizing the field of dialysis. Our focus is to create one high performing team, obsessed with progress, in an atmosphere that is brimming with transformative opportunities. The heart of our mission is pioneering a groundbreaking technology that redefines the landscape of dialysis, streamlining complexity and cost, because patients deserve “better” now, not some day.

At Outset we’re revolutionizing an industry and changing lives. We’re impacting what the future of dialysis looks like by creating a first-of-its-kind technology in order to reduce the cost and complexity of dialysis. FDA cleared for use across care settings, from the hospital to the clinic to the home, the Tablo® Hemodialysis System harnesses modern technology for a new holistic approach to dialysis care. We’re giving providers time back to focus on patient care. And we’re giving patients the power to take control of their life and get back to enjoying the things they love.

Position Overview

Outset is seeking a Junior Software Engineer to join our Cloud Infrastructure & Platform team. In this role, you will contribute to building, operating, and evolving the mission-critical backend systems that power Tablo devices and Outset's application ecosystem. You will work on brownfield systems, adding new capabilities, refining existing features, building tooling, and supporting cloud operations alongside an experienced, highly efficient team.

We are looking for someone who learns fast, thrives across multiple contexts, and communicates clearly. If you are intellectually curious, take ownership of what you pick up, and have already shown you can adapt quickly to new challenges, this is a great place to grow.

Candidate Attributes and Abilities

  • You learn quickly and embrace unfamiliar territory, picking up new technologies, systems, and requirements without needing a full playbook handed to you.
  • You can hold multiple goals and contexts in parallel without losing clarity on what matters most right now.
  • You communicate clearly and proactively, both written and verbal, with teammates and across teams.
  • You have a strong ownership mindset. When you pick something up, you see it through and follow up.
  • You have a practical appreciation for software quality, best practices, and clean engineering.
  • You are comfortable working on existing systems, understanding before making changes and improving them without breaking functionality.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance features on existing backend services and cloud infrastructure.
  • Support operations by monitoring, triaging, and resolving platform and service incidents.
  • Build internal tooling and automation to improve team efficiency and system reliability.
  • Work across multiple services and systems with varying contexts, priorities, and timelines.
  • Collaborate with teammates on design, implementation, and code reviews.
  • Participate in the on-call support rotation and contribute to operational runbooks.
  • Apply AI-assisted and spec-driven development practices where they accelerate quality and delivery.
  • Ability to work remotely from anywhere in Mexico, with infrequent travel to our offices in Tijuana and/or San Jose as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on software engineering experience. Internship experience counts.
  • No specific degree requirement. Demonstrated skills and a strong track record matter more than credentials.
  • Experience with Java (Spring Boot, Maven) or a comparable backend language and framework.
  • Working knowledge of AWS services such as EC2, ECR, ECS, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, Cognito, SNS, SQS, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, CodePipeline, and CodeArtifact.
  • Familiarity with containerization and CI/CD pipelines such as Docker, Jenkins, or equivalent tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to express ideas clearly and manage competing priorities across teams.
  • Proven ability to quickly learn new tools, systems, or technical domains and successfully apply them.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with PostgreSQL or another relational database.
  • Familiarity with Kafka or other distributed messaging systems.
  • Exposure to static analysis tools such as SonarQube or equivalent.
  • Awareness of AI-assisted or AI-spec-driven development workflows.
  • Familiarity with microservice architecture patterns and distributed systems concepts.
  • Experience contributing to brownfield codebases, including understanding existing systems, refactoring, and safely extending functionality.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
