Photographer
You: A driven artist who sees small details that reveal big stories, especially in cases that seem very technical or niche. You know how to talk to our clients to put them at ease—whether they’re from Manhattan, New York or Manhattan, Kansas. You’re comfortable with portraits, editorials, documentaries, and landscape/environmental styles. You’re fluent visually and know how to deliver our visual identity in any situation.
You’re passionate about individual liberty. You want to change hearts and minds by helping tell the stories of Americans overcoming the many hurdles created by government at every level.
Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies strip Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in and passionate for the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.
Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record in the United States Supreme Court, with 18 victories out of 20 cases litigated at the Court. We also have more than two hundred active cases across the nation.
Here’s what you get to do in in this role:
You’re planning and executing shoots with our clients located across the country—up to 30 per year. When you aren’t able to run the shoot yourself, you know how to convey our visual brand to contract photographers that you choose to work with. You develop shot lists based on our case messaging and our clients’ stories. You’re an adept editor that can turn stock photography into small masterpieces for our case pages.
In practice, your specific job duties will likely include:
- Planning and completing shoots with our clients in a way that aligns with our messaging and mission
- Creating photography that portrays our clients as heroes, traveling across the country to capture our clients as they pursue their dreams
- Editing photos (yours, contractors, and stock) for use online, on social media, and in print publications (like Sword&Scales)
- Managing our photo library so that any of your teammates can find the right picture for their projects
- Coordinating with the marketing team to bring our magazine Sword & Scales to life
- Upholding our visual identity in all photos
This role is ideal for someone with:
- A deep portfolio that displays competence in a range of styles
- Strong artistic instincts and the ability to find the visual component of any story
- Willing to travel up to 40–50% (approximately twice per month) to capture stories, support events, and document PLF’s work across the country
- A rolodex of trusted photographers and videographers you can rely on when you aren’t able to travel
- A problem-solving attitude when complications of production inevitably arise
- Must have a valid, active driver’s license — many of our clients and stories take place far beyond major airports, and getting there often means hitting the open road
- Experience with cinematography and videography is a strong plus, including capturing dynamic video content, interviews, and b-roll that bring stories to life across digital platforms
- Proximity to a major airport is preferred, given the role’s frequent travel requirements and the need for flexibility for short-notice trips
To Apply:
If you think you might be a good fit, submit the following application materials:
- A portfolio of 12 photos that demonstrate your style and range of ability
- Optional: Your resume or C.V., including your experience in the liberty movement and relevant professional experience
