Mechanical Engineer

About Us

We are taking on the climate crisis while ensuring that people have the tools they need to deal with our warming world. Heating, cooling, and refrigeration technologies are critical to modern life but use nearly 40% of all energy generated today, release potent greenhouse gas refrigerants to the atmosphere, and are too expensive to be adopted worldwide. This has to change, and fast, so Pascal’s working to better refrigeration (and air conditioning and heat pumps) through materials science.

We’re a group of materials scientists and engineers, based in Cambridge, MA, looking to upend the 150 year old HVACR industry and lead a transition to solid refrigerants. These new materials can unlock a massive efficiency boost over conventional systems, saving our customers money while reducing electrical load and eliminating refrigerant emissions. But getting there requires us to fundamentally redesign the air conditioner and we need your help.

If you want to geek out about refrigeration with us, make a dent in the climate crisis, or take on an entrenched multibillion dollar industry please apply. Sometimes, we even go get ice cream. Even if you don’t check every single box in the job description, we want your talents, your perspective, and your willingness to ask “what if?” on our team.

About the Role

The Mechanical Engineer will be an individual contributor with expertise in machining, CAD and mechanical prototyping. They will be an important contributor to the development of Pascal’s prototype systems and will have responsibility for specifying, designing, procuring, and building subsystems of the prototype.

Pascal is building a world-class engineering team, capable of ideating and prototyping systems at a rapid pace (2-3 weeks per design cycle) in order to drive its technical progress forward. The Mechanical Engineer will be an important contributor to this capability and have primary responsibility for mechanical drafting work and production of custom mechanical parts on the team.

What You'll Do

  • Design and produce custom mechanical parts to meet engineering specifications.
  • Organizing prototyping work to minimize lead times and increase development speed
  • Own the CAD model of Pascal’s prototype system
  • Independently specify, design, and procure or produce key subsystems of Pascal’s prototype
  • Utilize physics-based modeling to inform design choices
  • Contribute refinements to Pascal’s overall system design

What You'll Bring

If you're excited about Pascal and this role but don't meet every requirement, we encourage you to apply.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Experience (3+ years) with mechanical prototyping and machining. We prefer experience with systems including moving parts and metallic components.
  • Experience with pressurized systems, thermal systems, or other complex machinery (engines, turbines, compressors, hydraulics, pumps, thermal/momentum storage, HVAC). Diverse experiences are a plus.
  • Experience with CAD and engineering modeling software
  • Ability to conceptualize and execute on a mechanical design and develop creative solutions to unconventional problems.
  • Sufficient understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer to have appropriate intuition in designing Pascal’s systems.
  • Strong documentation skills.

Essential Traits:

  • Strong bias to action
  • Creative thinker
  • Operates with a growth mindset
  • Clear communicator
  • Collaborative worker

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role is $90,000-$105,000. We are committed to equitable compensation across our company, and we offer a generous benefits package to make sure you have the support you need. We cover 60% of the medical insurance premiums for our employees and their dependents on our base plans, and 100% of dental, and vision insurance premiums. We offer an unlimited Paid Time Off policy and encourage people to take regular vacation. We provide an employee-contribution 401(k) plan in addition to many other benefits. Every employee, regardless of gender identity or expression, is also eligible for 12 weeks of paid parental bonding leave after their 1-year anniversary at the company.

Equal Employment Opportunity

At Pascal, we are working toward better refrigeration through materials science. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all our employees and are seeking to build a diverse team that reflects the people and communities we hope to serve with our revolutionary technology. Pascal is proud to be an equal opportunity employer
