Web Experience Engineer

Lagos, Nigeria

Paystack’s mission is to power African ambition. Over 200,000 of some of the most renowned businesses in Africa including the likes of MTN, Burger King, UPS, PiggyVest, Crocs, Under Armour, and many others use Paystack’s modern payments gateway.

In just over 9 years, our team has introduced a steady cadence of innovation within the online payments landscape, such as automated recurring payments, the ability for customers to pay directly from their bank accounts, automated chargebacks, and much more. We’ve been acquired by Stripe and are doubling down on the mission to help build out Africa’s payments infrastructure.

At Paystack, we believe that we will win by recruiting talented people and giving them the space, resources, and support to do the best work of their lives. We hire skilled people who are both clever and kind, treat them with respect, and give them the means to succeed.

About the role

We're looking for a Web Experience Engineer to craft world-class web experiences that make Paystack the most delightful payments platform for businesses and their customers across Africa. As a Web Experience Engineer, you'll be responsible for building and maintaining high-performance, responsive, and accessible web interfaces that effectively communicate our brand and value proposition.

You'll combine design, engineering, and performance optimisation to ensure our web properties provide exceptional experiences for all users, regardless of their device or connection speed. Your work will directly impact how businesses perceive Paystack, helping us attract new merchants to our platform. You'll collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and other engineers to implement cohesive, on-brand web experiences that communicate our product offerings clearly and effectively.

This is a full-time role. You’ll work within the design team and report to a Design Manager.

The successful candidate will ideally be physically located in Nigeria.

We'll trust you to

  • Design and implement responsive, accessible, and performant web experiences using modern frontend technologies
  • Translate design mockups and prototypes into pixel-perfect, responsive web interfaces that maintain brand consistency
  • Optimize website performance, focusing on core web vitals and ensuring fast load times even on low-bandwidth connections
  • Implement and maintain our design system, ensuring component reusability and consistency across all web properties
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to build landing pages and micro-sites for product launches and campaigns
  • Build and maintain internal tooling and automation to improve team efficiency and ensure consistent implementation of web standards
  • Ensure cross-browser compatibility and implement progressive enhancement strategies for varying network conditions
  • Implement SEO best practices and work with the content team to optimize our web presence for discoverability
  • Set up and monitor web analytics to gain insights into user behaviour and conversion optimisation
  • Champion web accessibility standards and ensure our web properties are usable by everyone

You'll be a great fit if you

  • Have 3+ years of experience building modern, responsive web interfaces with a strong portfolio to showcase your work
  • Are proficient in frontend technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React and Vue
  • Have a keen eye for design details and can implement pixel-perfect UIs from design specifications
  • Are passionate about web performance optimisation and have experience building fast websites for challenging network environments
  • Understand responsive design principles and can create interfaces that work well across different device sizes
  • Have experience with version control systems (Git) and modern frontend build tools
  • Are familiar with SEO best practices and web analytics implementation
  • Have a strong understanding of web accessibility standards (WCAG)
  • Can communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical team members
  • Are a self-starter who can work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams

While this is not strictly required, it would be a plus if you

  • Have design skills and can independently transform ideas into working products without requiring detailed mockups
  • Have actively contributed to open-source projects
  • Have experience with internationalisation and localisation for multilingual websites
