Senior Product Designer, South Africa

South Africa

Paystack’s mission is to power African ambition. Over 200,000 of some of the most renowned businesses in Africa including the likes of MTN, Burger King, Crocs, Under Armour, and many others use Paystack’s modern payments gateway.

In just over 9 years, our team has introduced a steady cadence of innovation within the online payments landscape, such as automated recurring payments, the ability for customers to pay directly from their bank accounts, automated chargebacks, and much more. We’ve been acquired by Stripe and are doubling down on the mission to help build out Africa’s payments infrastructure.

At Paystack, we believe that we will win by recruiting talented people and giving them the space, resources, and support to do the best work of their lives. We hire skilled people who are both clever and kind, treat them with respect, and give them the means to succeed.

About the role

We're looking for an exceptional Product Designer to lead our design efforts in South Africa. This is an opportunity to shape how merchants in one of Africa's most vibrant economies experience our platform and help build financial infrastructure that drives economic growth.

At Paystack, we believe that exceptional design is a competitive advantage. As a Product Designer for South Africa, you'll combine business strategy, user experience, and visual design to create intuitive payment experiences that delight our users and solve real problems for African businesses.

You'll collaborate closely with our product managers, engineers, and business teams to understand the unique needs of South African merchants and create elegant solutions that feel like they were made just for them. You'll also play a crucial role in adapting our existing design system to meet local market needs while maintaining a cohesive Paystack experience.

What makes this role unique is the opportunity to directly impact how businesses operate in South Africa. The payment solutions you design will help merchants overcome barriers to online commerce and create new possibilities for growth. Your work will be seen and used by thousands of businesses every day, from small startups to major corporations.

This is a full-time role, and you'll report directly to the Product Design Lead. The successful candidate will ideally be physically located in South Africa, although we might make exceptions for great candidates.

We'll trust you to

  • Lead the design vision for Paystack in South Africa, ensuring our products meet the unique needs of local merchants
  • Create user-centred designs by understanding business requirements, user feedback, and market research
  • Design intuitive interfaces and experiences that solve complex problems in simple ways
  • Develop customer journey maps, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups
  • Partner closely with product managers to define features and user stories
  • Collaborate with engineers to ensure designs are implemented with quality and attention to detail
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to inform design decisions
  • Design delightful interactions that make our products not just usable, but enjoyable
  • Contribute to our design system and help maintain consistent experiences across platforms
  • Work closely with other designers across the company to ensure consistency and shared learning
  • Advocate for South African users and ensure their needs are represented in product decisions
  • Mentor junior designers and provide constructive feedback to help them grow

You'll thrive in this role if you

  • Have 5+ years of experience designing digital products, with a strong portfolio showcasing your process and outcomes
  • Have a deep understanding of user-centred design principles and methodologies
  • Are familiar with the South African market and its unique challenges and opportunities
  • Excel at both UX and UI design, with strong skills in information architecture and interaction design
  • Have experience working with design systems and component libraries
  • Are proficient with design tools like Figma
  • Communicate clearly about design decisions and can articulate your reasoning
  • Work well in cross-functional teams and can collaborate effectively with non-designers
  • Are comfortable with ambiguity and can drive projects forward with minimal direction
  • Have a growth mindset and continuously seek to improve your craft
  • Are passionate about creating products that make a real difference in people's lives

If you're excited about designing products that empower businesses across Africa, we'd love to hear from you!
