Senior Backend Engineer

About Pear Commerce

Pear Commerce is the retail ecommerce platform that connects CPGs to retailers, converting shoppable media into actionable insights that fuel performance marketing

We are redefining how CPG brands think about ecommerce by providing the infrastructure for the Retail Ecommerce channel alongside DTC and Amazon. Our software and partnerships illuminate the customer journeys—from impression to sale, providing a closed feedback loop for CPGs' digital marketing efforts and allowing for true conversion-optimized campaigns (for the first time ever).

And if this all sounds like a different language…essentially, we make sure when a brand like Sparkling Ice serves an ad, they’re able to capture real-time insights into how their campaigns are performing - down to the content, platform, geo, and audience - to increase overall marketing effectiveness.

Oh, and we make the industry’s coolest and most shoppable store locators, too.

The Team

At Pear, we hire the best and then take really good care of them. We want you to grow here, and believe hiring and keeping world-class talent is a true competitive advantage. To be clear, our team is not a family. It’s a group of insanely talented and kind people that work tirelessly (but not like on the weekend or evenings) to make Pear better than it was yesterday.

Pear is a venture-backed startup and, to succeed, you must be comfortable with our approach:

  • We focus on alignment so we can act autonomously.
  • We are builders and do-ers and we move quickly.
  • We ask why because we are curious and like to learn.
  • We want the ideal team player—humble, hungry, and smart.
  • We are not homogenous. We celebrate diversity.
  • We work hard but know when to turn work off.
  • We are not afraid of messiness, of change, of moving fast.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with full-stack engineering experience to join our team. In this role, you will be involved in all layers of the tech stack, working on everything from building powerful backend systems to collaborating with frontend teams for shopper-facing and embedded JavaScript SDKs.

You Will

  • Design, implement, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend systems using Java and other modern technologies.
  • Collaborate with frontend developers building SPA (Single Page Application) JavaScript/HTML interfaces and embedded JavaScript SDKs.
  • Manage AWS deployments, ensuring the reliability and scalability of our infrastructure.
  • Implement and optimize APIs that enable CPG brands to directly engage shoppers and deliver real-time inventory and purchasing options based on state-of-the-art product matching and store-level inventory acquisition.
  • Leverage GitHub PR workflows and CI/CD pipelines in a multi-repository environment (non-microservice) to ensure seamless development and deployment.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to deliver shopper-first marketing tools and solutions that drive engagement and sales.

You Have

  • 5+ years of experience writing idiomatic JavaScript, Golang, Java, Python, Scala, or Ruby.
  • Built modern, resilient and operationally sane backend systems exemplifying industry standards (HTTP REST, GraphQL, Stream processing, Big Data).
  • A passion for teaching and mentoring teammates on software engineering best practices and architecture
  • Worked with stakeholders to clarify and translate requirements for teammates
  • Used modern version-control system for your source code repository (Git, Mercurial, GitHub, BitBucket).
  • Always linted your code or, at the very least, knew you should.
  • Knowledge of what parts of your code require tests and you write those tests.
  • Used objective judgment in leveraging the right frameworks and technologies.
  • Experience with cloud computing systems (GCP, AWS, etc.) and SAAS concepts.
  • Leveraged continuous integration systems to their full extent (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Bamboo, Jenkins, TravisCI).
  • Planned for, built, evolved and scrutinized monitoring and alerting for your production systems.
  • Experience deploying, troubleshooting, and maintaining your systems in production and staging environments.

Compensation

The base compensation for this role is $170,000-$235,000. Salary is based around a number of factors including geography, experience, and skillset.

We Offer

  • 100% of health premiums paid for you and your dependents
  • Fully remote work with bi-yearly onsites to meet your colleagues
  • 401(k) plan
  • $250/month co-working space stipend
  • $350 one-time home office stipend
  • 20 company holidays and unlimited PTO
