Senior Product Designer

New York, NY

Pelago is the leading specialty substance use care provider, built on the belief that effective treatment means matching care intensity to what each member actually needs rather than defaulting to the most expensive intervention. Our programs guide members through every stage of the substance use spectrum, from unhealthy habits to active use disorders, delivering personalized treatment for tobacco, alcohol, opioid, cannabis, and stimulant use based on individual health, habits, genetics, and goals.

With Sona, our voice-first AI Mental Health Specialist, Pelago now applies that same clinically-driven model to mental health, pairing deep clinical expertise with technology to expand access without compromising care quality. We believe technology should make clinical care more precise and more human, not replace the judgment behind it.

Pelago has scaled to helping hundreds of employers and health plans and has already helped more than 750,000 members better manage their substance use. If you're passionate about AI and making an impact on the health of others, join us and make it happen!

About the job

We’re seeking a Senior Product Designer to join the Product team at Pelago, the AI-led, clinician-backed behavioral health clinic for substance use, mental health, and behavioral addiction care.

Every member now starts with Sona, our voice-first clinical AI, which helps assess their needs and supports them throughout their care journey under licensed clinical supervision.

In this role, you’ll shape how members experience Sona and how AI works alongside our human care team. You’ll design thoughtful, intuitive experiences across voice, mobile, and the moments where members transition between AI-powered support and clinician-led care.

You’ll own meaningful parts of the end-to-end member journey, from initial engagement and assessment through ongoing care. This is an opportunity to apply strong product design fundamentals to an emerging technology, helping define how AI can make behavioral healthcare more accessible, personalized, and supportive.

You’ll partner closely with Product, Engineering, Clinical, and Growth to translate complex member needs into simple, effective experiences. As Sona evolves, you’ll have the opportunity to influence the design principles and interaction patterns that shape the future of AI-supported care at Pelago.

In this role you will…

  • Own end-to-end product design for key member experiences across Sona and the Pelago app, from discovery and problem definition through prototyping, launch, and iteration.
  • Design intuitive, engaging experiences across conversational AI, voice, and mobile, helping members navigate assessment, care matching, and ongoing support.
  • Translate complex clinical and technical workflows into clear, accessible, and human-centered experiences that build member confidence and trust.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and Clinical teams to design thoughtful interactions between AI and human care, including clear communication, member choice, and seamless handoffs to clinicians.
  • Lead design discovery and user research, including interviews, usability testing, and rapid experimentation, to understand member needs and validate design decisions.
  • Create high-quality user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and polished interface designs, using Figma and modern AI-assisted design tools to explore and iterate efficiently.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to bring designs to life, balancing user experience, technical feasibility, and product goals.
  • Use qualitative insights, product analytics, and member feedback to evaluate experiences, identify opportunities, and continuously improve the product.
  • Contribute to Pelago’s design system and evolving interaction patterns, helping create consistent, accessible experiences across the platform.
  • Work with Growth and Product partners to improve key member journeys, including enrollment, activation, engagement, and retention.

We’re looking for

  • 6+ years of product design experience, with a strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ownership of digital products, from identifying user problems through delivering thoughtful, high-quality solutions.
  • Strong expertise in user experience, interaction design, and visual design, with the ability to simplify complex workflows into intuitive, engaging interfaces.
  • Experience designing and shipping consumer-facing digital products, ideally across mobile and web.
  • A solid foundation in user-centered design and research methodologies, including discovery, prototyping, usability testing, and incorporating feedback into product decisions.
  • Advanced proficiency in Figma, including interactive prototyping, design systems, and collaboration with engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with modern AI tools and an interest in using them to accelerate design exploration, prototyping, and iteration.
  • Strong product thinking, with the ability to balance user needs, business goals, technical considerations, and measurable outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to articulate design decisions and work effectively with Product, Engineering, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity, taking ownership, and iterating quickly in a collaborative, fast-moving product environment.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing AI-powered products, conversational interfaces, voice experiences, or other emerging interaction patterns.
  • Experience in healthcare, behavioral health, digital health, or another industry involving sensitive user journeys and high levels of trust.
  • Experience working on products that support complex decision-making, personalized experiences, or interactions between digital services and human experts.
  • Familiarity with AI prototyping tools or experience experimenting with large language models to explore product concepts and interaction patterns.
