Position Overview
The Director of Reimbursement & Market Access is accountable for developing and executing U.S. and global market access strategies to enable the successful commercialization of category-defining therapeutics for orthopedic-related markets. This role requires deep expertise in pricing, coding, reimbursement, and payer engagement across both public and private channels. The Director will lead efforts to define reimbursement pathways, develop health economic and value demonstration tools, and engage with key stakeholders including CMS, commercial payers, and HTA bodies.
Success in this role depends on the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, hands-on startup environment, build cross-functional alignment, and translate clinical and economic data into actionable strategies that support product adoption and sustained market access.
Essential Functions
- Develop and execute U.S. market access and reimbursement strategy aligned with commercialization goals
- Design and oversee health economics models (cost-effectiveness, budget impact) to support product value positioning
- Lead payer engagement strategy across public and private stakeholders, including CMS, Medicare Advantage, and commercial plans
- Define reimbursement pathways including coding, DRG/APC mapping, payment support, and NTAP considerations
- Develop value communication tools and payer-facing materials including dossiers, presentations, and policy briefs
- Lead pricing strategy development informed by market dynamics, product differentiation, and competitive benchmarks
- Organize payer and health system advisory boards to gather strategic input and validate assumptions
- Act as internal subject matter expert on U.S. reimbursement landscape, informing launch readiness and go-to-market planning
- Monitor policy developments in hospital reimbursement, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection control that impact market access
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Clinical, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, and R&D to align evidence generation with access requirements
- Support external engagement with IDNs, integrated health systems, professional societies, and orthopedic KOLs to drive adoption and inform messaging
- Advise Commercial Team on launch sequencing and channel strategy from a reimbursement perspective
- Contribute to global access planning and support ex-U.S. strategy development as needed
- Provide input into investor and stakeholder materials related to pricing, reimbursement, and access strategy
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Advanced degree (MBA, MPH, PharmD, PhD) in Health Economics, Health Policy, Pharmacy, or related field strongly preferred
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in market access, health economics, reimbursement, or payer strategy within pharma, biotech, or Medtech
- Demonstrated success in securing reimbursement and guiding access strategy in complex therapeutic areas (e.g., anti-infectives, specialty hospital care)
- Creative and driven to understand reimbursement scenarios and optimize for maximal economic impact. Proactively works around obstacles and overcomes challenges that can impair product facility/formulary access, adoption, coverage, and reimbursement.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. healthcare reimbursement systems including CMS, Medicare/Medicaid, DRGs, and hospital outpatient pathways
- Demonstrated ability to build health economic models and value communication tools that influence payer decision-making
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills including experience with payer negotiations, advisory boards, and health systems
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and leadership in a matrixed, fast-paced environment
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences
- Experience with NTAP submissions and inpatient reimbursement processes preferred
- Direct experience in hospital-based therapies, ortho-biologics, or orthopedic devices preferred
- Knowledge of antimicrobial stewardship policy and hospital-acquired infection reimbursement penalties preferred
- Comfort working in early-stage biotech or resource-constrained settings with high strategic ownership preferred
- Familiarity with value-based pricing models and early access initiatives preferred
