CGMBS Training Program - Internal Applicants Only
Training Program Purpose and Objectives
The training program is a 52-week program of documented didactic and practical laboratory training in a CLIA licensed laboratory. The program will provide high quality training and professional preparation to qualified employees to prepare them to enter the workforce as professionals in the field of clinical molecular genetics. The objectives of the program are to train competent molecular genetics biologist scientists who can work independently with the ability to interpret, implement and troubleshoot established procedures.
The trainee is considered a full-time employee with a job classification of trainee, with all applicable wages and benefits. The trainee is the direct report of the program director or designee.
Training Program Objectives
The training program provides trainees with the opportunity to develop, demonstrate, apply and evaluate scientific knowledge and competencies necessary to achieve skills through integration of the following program objectives:
- Proper recordkeeping and quality control requirements of the laboratory
- Good laboratory techniques in the preparation of reagents to proper concentration and pH
- Quality control of equipment, reagents and chemicals
- Good lab safety
- An understanding of the concepts of molecular biology
- Performance of nucleic acid extraction and detection techniques
- Performance of nucleic acid hybridization techniques
- Performance of DNA/RNA library preparation
- Performance of nucleic acid amplification
- An understanding of genetic nomenclature
- Performance of DNA sequencing techniques
- Performance of Microarray techniques
- Performance of techniques that are offered as clinical tests in the laboratory, including Sanger sequencing, next-generation sequencing, and PCR
- Instruction of state clinical laboratory laws and regulations and CLIA regulations
- Instruction on legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities and good communication skills
Admissions Requirements
Applicants must meet all requirements. Applicants must complete a request for admission and submit it to the program Education Coordinator. Trainees will be selected to enter the program based on application evaluations and departmental needs. Once selected, trainees will be notified immediately, and training will begin on an agreed-upon start date (given the rolling admissions nature of the application process). Minimum application requirements are the following:
- Employees who have been continuously employed full-time (40 hours/week) with Personalis for at least one year, with that year of service beginning on or before September 2024, are eligible.
- Employees who have received an overall rating less than “Meets Expectations” on their last annual Performance Review, received a written warning, or have been placed on a performance plan within the last 12 months are not eligible to participate.
- A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry, OR a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree.
- Documentation of baccalaureate degree must include college transcript(s) confirming degree conferred.
- Applicants must have pending application to Laboratory Field Services for a Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist Trainee License. Final acceptance for admission to the program is contingent upon receiving the trainee license.
- Applicants must qualify to sit for the ASCP MB certifying examination. Applicants may visit the ASCP website and check eligibility at https://apps.ascp.org/BOCROUTEFINDER
- Applicants must have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency in the U.S. to be admitted to the program.
- Submit a Personal Statement, stating why you believe attaining a CGMBS license is the appropriate next step for your career and how your skills/personal qualities to date makes you a strong candidate for this program.
- Provide the names and email address of two recommendations, one from your current supervisor and one additional (either internal or external), from whom letters of recommendation will be received.
