Biothreat Intelligence Specialist

We are seeking a Biothreat Intelligence Specialist to enhance the delivery of actionable intelligence to our customers.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Biothreat Intelligence Specialist is a key position with responsibility for identifying and assessing biothreats to produce concise intelligence communications (i.e., written briefs and content called “Alerts” at PHC), one of PHC’s flagship products. Alerts consist of a brief summary of a current threat and relevant context about the situation, along with actionable recommendations businesses should consider taking to protect their assets from the threat. The candidate must be able to read and synthesize epidemiological and intelligence information to determine the highest priority biothreats that require being translated into an alert for our customers. Alerts are written on a daily basis (Mon - Fri), with a hard deadline each day. The ideal candidate will be adept at analytical thinking and rapidly writing concise communications while working in a fast-paced environment.
Working closely with epidemiologists and data scientists, the Biothreat Intelligence Specialist will support both manual and automated production of biothreat alerts. The Biothreat Intelligence Specialist will review various data sources, including media reports and raw data, to identify alerts of interest and relevance to PHC’s customers. They will assist in identifying and evaluating new data sources for such alerts. They will draft explanatory text to help customers understand the significance of events and choose actions that protect their business.
In this role, you will:
- Evaluate public health and media data sources for quality, trustworthiness, limitations, and context
- Synthesize biothreat intelligence information and rapidly generate scientifically accurate messages and business-relevant recommendations to support customer decision-making
- Monitor internal tools to identify emerging threats and topics relevant to PHC’s customers
- Collaborate with epidemiologists and data scientists developing new applications and products, including assisting with training AI/ML models
- Performs data entry, data management, and process development
- Provide subject matter expertise to our Marketing team, which will include review of marketing materials for scientific accuracy and drafting of some marketing materials
In addition, this role will be responsible for other ad-hoc duties as assigned.
Required qualifications
- MPH or equivalent with five years of related work experience
- Completed coursework in epidemiology or assisted with outbreak investigations
- Understanding of infectious disease dynamics, including modes of transmission, epidemiological models, and biosecurity implications of different pathogens
- Working knowledge of communicable and noncommunicable diseases, including vector-borne disease
- Excellent writing skills, with particular emphasis on writing about science/health topics for non-expert audiences
- Experience conducting literature reviews
- Experience working in Google Sheets to create and maintain datasets
- Excellent attention to detail
- Must be flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to shift quickly when needed while producing accurate and timely written materials
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to work independently but also be a great team player
- Fully remote position, travel 10-15%
- Must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident
Preferred qualifications
- Health communication experience
- Working knowledge of biosecurity and business continuity
- Experience with translating scientific knowledge for the general public
- Degree concentration in epidemiology or infectious disease-related field
- Public health agency experience (local, state, or federal)
- International work or knowledge of public health systems outside of the US
- Experience with automation of disease surveillance or data modernization
- Early-stage startup experience
- Experience with applying risk assessment tools
- Familiarity with productivity tools, including Slack
- Eastern or Central timezone strongly preferred

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Total compensation includes salary and stock option grants. The salary range for this position is between $100,000 to $150,000, and individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. PHC offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental and vision insurance, wellbeing offerings, 401K, unlimited PTO, paid holidays, and a work from home stipend. PHC covers 100% of medical premiums for employees and 50% of medical premiums for dependents.
