Job Description

The Phillies are looking for a qualified English Language Learner (ELL) instructor to teach small, multi-level groups of international baseball players approximately one hour per day between the range of 12-2pm multiple times per week during the months of April-September. The organization is dedicated to supporting the education and development of our players and the Life Skills and Education Department plays a vital role in helping Minor League players excel through language education. With approximately 30% of our players being Spanish-speaking, the Phillies are proud to offer a world-class English language learning program that continues as they rise to upper level minor league baseball affiliates.

With classes and additional paid planning time, the instructor can expect around 8-10 hours per week. The schedule is dependent on the Jersey Shore Blue Claws baseball game schedule. Classes will be in person and virtual depending on if the team is home or away.

Essential Duties

  • Ability to teach multi-level classes of international baseball players
  • Focus lessons on speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural acclimation
  • Develop creative and engaging lesson plans that support authentic language learning
  • Emphasize specialized vocabulary on topics that address specific needs of baseball players
  • Utilize technology in the classroom and as a tool for continued learning
  • Analyze pre-testing results to assess students’ needs and adapt classes to support learning 
  • Build relationships with students to create a safe and dynamic classroom culture/learning environment
  • Work with the Manager of Life Skills & Education to ensure alignment with programming across levels of the organization

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, ELL, TESOL, or related field with TESOL/ELL certification
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience teaching ELL
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish)

Recommended Skills & Experience

  • Experience teaching non-traditional, adult, or out-of-school youth students
  • Experience teaching occupation-specific language skills a plus
  • Knowledge of baseball a plus
  • Experience with Google Workplace and Zoom
  • Strong communication skills
