Job Description
This internship provides the unique opportunity to work with the Philadelphia Phillies Nutrition Department to support the nutrition needs of elite athletes to help them reach their highest level of performance both on and off the field. This internship is designed for current or recent graduate students and recently credentialed RD’s looking to build their skills and gain experience working in professional baseball.
Responsibilities
- Educating players and staff on relevant topics in nutrition/sports nutrition
- Creating and distributing educational materials; handouts, presentations, Instagram posts, etc.
- Managing daily operations of the Fueling Station; education, stocking, budget, smoothie making, hydration drinks
- Performing hydration and sweat testing on assigned athletes using MX3 and creating individualized hydration plans based on results (under supervision of RD)
- Integrating with the MiLB rehab team to provide appropriate nutrition interventions to help athletes return to play (under supervision of RD)
- Working with athletes on an individual basis to help them meet their individual nutrition needs and goals, including appropriate supplementation regimen
- Performing body composition assessments on assigned players using InBody and using this information to inform player care plan
- Assisting in the development of culturally inclusive menus that meet nutrition department guidelines and ensure that food safety guidelines are being met
- Supervising player meals and provide meal coaching/education as needed
- Working with athletes and foodservice staff to collect menu feedback and inform future menus
- Researching quality catering companies for home and on the road catering for lunch, pregame and post-game meals at affiliates
- Managing inventory of NSF for Sport certified supplements, including budget tracking
- Participating in bi-weekly nutrition calls with Nutrition department
- Staying up to date on scientific research and trends in performance nutrition
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Nutrition Coordinator
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in dietetics or nutrition field
- Registered Dietitian (RD) a plus, or at least on track to obtain
- Ability to be in Clearwater FL during spring training and during the minor league season
- Experience in collegiate and/or professional sports setting a plus
- Interest in learning sports nutrition for high level athletes
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and have a flexible schedule as needed
- Spanish speaking capabilities preferred
Skills
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively at all levels with players and staff
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects
- Proficiency in Canva and Microsoft Excel and Word
