Associate Software Engineer, Full-Stack Development

Philadelphia, PA

Title: Associate Software Engineer, Full-Stack Development
Department: Research and Development
Reports to: Manager, Software Engineering
Status: Hourly Part-Time Seasonal
Location: Philadelphia, PA

Position Overview:

The work of an Associate Software Engineer at the Phillies extends well beyond merely coding. Phillies Engineering takes a product-centered approach in creating the platform, systems, and tooling that empower our entire organization to spend more time thinking about baseball. We turn data into information into action.

As an associate on our application development team, you will have the opportunity to build the data-driven applications that our front office staff, scouts, and coaches use every day. You will gain hands-on experience across the entire technical stack, from crafting intuitive front-end interfaces to developing robust back-end APIs. You will collaborate with senior engineers and end-users to create visually engaging and highly performant tools.

Your work will focus on translating complex datasets, including ball and player tracking data (Statcast), biomechanical time-series data, player biographical and contract information, and internally developed datasets, into interactive products that allow users to make better, faster decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design and development of web-based applications used by Baseball Operations.
  • Assist in building and maintaining back-end APIs that power our front-end applications.
  • Collaborate with engineers and product stakeholders to translate requirements into intuitive and engaging user interfaces.
  • Apply strong design principles to ensure a clean and seamless user experience.
  • Learn and apply full-stack development best practices, including participating in code reviews, documentation, and testing.

Required Qualifications:

  • Possess or are pursuing a BS degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience.
  • Software development experience in one or more general purpose programming languages (our stack is Python, Typescript, and Go).
  • Familiarity with SQL and relational databases (e.g. MySQL, Postgres).
  • Familiarity with web development concepts, API design, and UI/UX principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong desire to learn new technologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of curiosity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks like React or Vue.
  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs using frameworks like FastAPI, Flask, or Express.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Google Cloud, AWS) and containerization (Docker).
  • A demonstrated passion for baseball and sports analytics.

Interested applicants should submit their resume, cover letter, and answers to the following questions:

Tell us about a technical decision you made for a project where you had to make a significant trade-off (e.g., choosing a simpler but less performant solution, picking a library you didn't know well, etc.). What was the situation, what were the pros and cons you weighed, and in hindsight, would you make the same decision again? (300 words or less)

Why do you want to work for a baseball team, and how do you see your technical skills contributing to a baseball operations or research & development environment? (200 words or less)

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity, marital or veteran status, or any other protected class.
