Standards Engineer II
Job Summary:
The (Standards Engineer II) is a critical technical expert responsible for ensuring that Phoenix Contact’s products meet all applicable national and international standards. This role provides strategic and operational leadership in interpreting, applying, and communicating regulatory and certification requirements across the product lifecycle. The (Standards Engineer II) collaborates with cross-functional teams to embed compliance into product design, development, and manufacturing, ensuring global market readiness and customer confidence.
Responsibilities:
- Determine North American compliance requirements for new products and provide detailed requirements for the requirement specification.
- Manage and coordinate Approvals Projects related to the development and sustaining engineering of products in D&M.
- Drive the development of new North American certification Standards to strategically position new products and technologies into new business fields and applications.
- Develop competency as knowledge expert in applicable North American Standards and establish relationship with new approval agencies as required.
- Provide clear and effective communication of regulatory compliance requirements for development teams at all levels within the organization.
- Support promotion of regulatory conformance for specific markets or applications by authoring whitepapers, articles, etc.
- Lead and coordinate internal/external Approvals audits for responsible products.
- Maintain product approvals documentation in the PLM system related to approvals agencies and administrate the technical file for responsible products.
- Train and educate new employees in matters regarding product safety approvals and internal approvals process.
- Support Phoenix Contact HQ approvals teams with USA based approvals agencies.
- Participate in Engineering changes, conducting the analysis of modifications affecting the certification of those products under change.
- Monitor regulatory compliance changes and certifications for obsolescence which affect the business and communicate those clearly, effectively and in a timely manner to the appropriate internal stakeholders.
- Lobby for Standards updates, or clarification to wording, where ambiguity is identified in categories and conditions of acceptability.
- Review certificates and test reports from external laboratories for completeness and accuracy.
- Perform regulatory review for all local product development projects.
- Provide application-based consultative support to Phoenix Contact Technical Service where customers implement a Phoenix Contact product in their design, but compliance concerns arise.
- Aid in the reduction of Approvals project costs and time to obtain approval. (i.e., faster speed to market through improved project execution and negotiations with Approvals Agency).
- Support of approval related production audits by preparing information and coordinating between the different parties.
- Demonstrate initiative by understanding what actions need to be taken and completing the required tasks while seeking the perspective of others as required.
- Demonstrate an honest and forthright presence by taking responsibility for own mistakes and not blaming others, and by doing what he / she commits to doing.
- Work as a team player to make a difference within the business and express gratitude and appreciation to others who have provided information, assistance, or support.
- Readily handle change through taking advantage of lifelong learning opportunities and being open minded and curious in the face of new challenges. Collaborate with engineering teams in the international BU network through the product development process.
- Other duties as assigned by the Manager.
Qualifications:
- BS Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 3-5 Years demonstrated experience with Product Safety Standards
- Experience working with testing agencies, specifically UL, CSA
- Experience with Industry Standards (NEMA, SAE, TIA, ODVA preferred)
- Understand the basics of CE (EMC and LVD)
- Knowledge of ATEX, IECEx a plus
- Excellent communication skills (verbal/written)
- Strong organizational skills
