Role: Senior Manager - Data Governance
Reports to: Group Head - Data Privacy, Data Governance and Data Ethics.
Role Overview:
Be at the forefront of shaping the future of PhonePe’s new data governance vertical! We are seeking a Data Governance Senior Manager in our Data Privacy, Data Governance, and Data Ethics team to help drive our organization's data governance efforts. In this new, pivotal role, you will drive the development and implementation of data governance charter, policies, standards, and procedures as an individual contributor, with the opportunity to build a team. You will work cross-functionally with various teams to enable compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and drive business initiatives. Roles and Responsibilities:
- Design and implement a scalable data governance framework that aligns with the organization's overarching business strategy, regulatory compliance requirements, and ethical considerations.
- Define clear data governance principles, roles and responsibilities, charter and processes for data management, access, and quality. Help establish appropriate forums, as needed, comprising key stakeholders to oversee and guide the implementation of the data governance strategy.
- Lead the development, adoption, implementation, maintenance, and dissemination of data governance policies, standards, and procedures, while ensuring alignment with existing data privacy and security policies and procedures.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the organization, including business leaders, IT professionals, data scientists, legal and compliance teams, and external partners. Understand their data needs, concerns, and priorities, and ensure that data governance initiatives are aligned with their requirements and expectations.
- Regularly report on data governance performance to senior management and stakeholders, highlighting successes, challenges, and areas for improvement.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of a data inventory, working in tandem with stakeholders across the organization. Help with data discovery, data classification, and data dictionary development efforts to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the data governance program, ensuring that data governance policies and standards, including those around data sharing, are implemented effectively.
- As required, evaluate, select, and implement data governance tools and technologies (data catalogs, data lineage tools, metadata management tools, etc.) to support data governance initiatives.
- Develop and deliver training and education programs to raise awareness of data governance principles, policies, and best practices among employees at all levels.
- Lead change management efforts to ensure smooth adoption of data governance policies, procedures, and technologies.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with relevant data governance regulations. Stay updated on regulatory changes and proactively adapt data governance policies and procedures to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Collaborate with legal, compliance, IT, and business units to maintain a data retention policy and schedule that aligns with legal, regulatory, and business requirements. Communicate the policy and schedule clearly to all stakeholders and ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities in adhering to it.
Minimum Requirements:
- Completed Bachelor’s degree in Information Security, Engineering, IT, or a related field.
- 8-10 years of experience working in the Data Governance, Data Quality, and Data Management domains.
- Experience implementing data governance initiatives such as data catalogs, data lineage tools, data quality tools, metadata management tools, master data management (MDM) tools, and/or data privacy tools, to support data governance initiatives.
- Leadership skills to develop and manage high-performing teams
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
- Strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate and respond to regulatory changes and business needs
- Strong project management and organizational skills
Good to have:
- Master’s degree in Privacy, Information Security, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience working in the FinTech industry and understanding of various products and services.
- Experience setting up data governance programs / initiatives for organizations from the ground up.
