The Role
The Honest Company is seeking a Director of Accounting to join our Finance & Accounting organization. Reporting to the VP, Controller, this role is responsible for overseeing the general ledger and financial close processes, ensuring the integrity of the Company’s financial records and the application of US GAAP in a public company environment.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong, operationally minded accounting leader who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth company and brings a SOX-first mindset to everything they do. This role leads the General Ledger accounting team and partners closely with Operations Accounting, External Reporting & Internal Controls, and Commercial Finance to support accurate financial reporting and a disciplined close process.
What you’ll do:
- Direct and oversee all aspects of the close process including revenue recognition, cost of sales (including inventory and COGS accounting), and all general ledger activity
- Manage the quarterly review and year-end audit; ensure PBC deliverables are accurate and delivered to external auditor on time
- Review all key balance sheet reconciliations and ensure timely completion
- Perform detailed analytical reviews to validate asset and liability account accuracy with particular focus on inventory, accruals, and revenue-related accounts
- Prepare schedules and provide input on public filings including 10-Qs and annual 10-K; review footnote disclosures related to revenue, inventory, and other GL-owned areas for accuracy and completeness
- Manage the direct work of the general ledger accounting team; provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and career development
- Lead effort to identify and create efficiencies in general accounting functions including close process automation, journal entry rationalization, and system optimization within the ERP
- Serve as the primary technical accounting resource for the GL team: research and interpret new and proposed accounting standards, prepare technical accounting memos, and lead the implementation of new standards across the organization
- Assist in overseeing all cash operations including investment, credit facility and payment approvals
- Work closely with Senior Director of External Reporting and Internal Controls to document key controls in the SOX control framework
- Partner closely with the Commercial Finance team on financial analytics, business insights, and cross-functional projects; provide GL perspective on ad hoc initiatives
- Support the VP, Controller on treasury-related matters including cash operations, compliance, and investment reporting, as needed
- Create and/or prepare ad hoc reports for Controller and CFO
- Maintain a high-performing team culture consistent with the Company's values; proactively assess resource needs against close workload and growth initiatives
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or finance
- CPA required; active license preferred
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with significant time in a public company
- SOX 404(b) compliance experience required; familiarity with PCAOB auditing standards and working with external auditors in an integrated audit environment
- Experience building and managing high-performing teams; experience managing managers preferred
- Demonstrated inventory and COGS accounting experience, including standard costing, cost variance analysis, and inventory reserve methodology
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, general accounting processes and internal controls, including hands-on experience researching and implementing new accounting standards and drafting technical accounting memos
- Proficiency with top-tier ERP and related reporting applications
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to operate with urgency and discipline in a fast-paced, evolving public company environment
Bonus points for:
- MBA or advanced degree in Accounting/Finance
- Experience in a consumer goods, CPG, or retail company
- Experience with a Big 4 audit of a public company consumer brand
Compensation
The pay range for this role is $170,000 - $200,000. Actual compensation is based on many factors including but not limited to depth of experience, skill level, ability, knowledge, education, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.
The total rewards package for this position may also include base, annual incentive plan, benefits, retirement plan, equity, and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
