We’re currently on the lookout for exceptional pirates to join our crew as a General Counsel otherwise known as a Keeper o’ the Code.

Responsibilities:
- Practice balanced buccaneering with advisory and strategic roles: You’ll report directly to the CEO to help develop and execute Pirate Ship’s legal strategy, aligning it with the company’s overall objectives while advising C-Suite, HR, Product, Finance, and other business groups on legal matters and ensuring compliance across the crew.
- Chart a straight course in corporate governance: Advise C-Suite on governance best practices, ensure compliance with internal policies and fiduciary duties, and support the development and maintenance of governance frameworks that align with the company’s strategic objectives.
- Sail the Seven Seas: Oversee both domestic and international regulatory compliance and risk management by ensuring Pirate Ship remains fully compliant with all applicable laws and regulations, particularly with respect to Germany, including assisting in compliance activities and managing regulatory interactions when needed.
- Keep a weather eye: Keep a lookout on the legal horizon for changing tides the likes of GDPR and CCPA, and make sure the company is leading the way on privacy compliance.
- Decipher cryptic scrolls and create battle plans: Craft operational procedures and protocols related to privacy, data protection and cybersecurity including meeting the standards of ISO 27001 and SOC II.
- Parley with diplomatic aplomb: Represent the company when meeting with regulators, Government muckety-mucks, and when overseeing legal disputes and managing litigation, engaging with outside counsel as necessary to help defend the ship.
- Plumb the depths: Conduct deep explorations into risk assessment, identify potential legal concerns, and develop strategies to mitigate risk proactively across the organization.
- Bottle your messages: Oversee the drafting, review, and negotiation of all contracts, ensuring Pirate Ship’s interests are safeguarded in all agreements with vendors, partners, and employees.
- Special missions and strategic alliances: Draft and negotiate various agreements, including proposals for outside counsel and litigation partners/vendors.
- Crew up: Lead and develop a high-performing legal team, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
- Ride the seas of change: You’re comfortable in a remote environment where there’s lots of change.
- Sail from your port o’ call: You’re able to work from home and connect with your crewmates throughout the day over chat, voice, and video through company provided equipment, but also available for in-person meetings multiple times per year at varied locations.
- Hoist the Jolly Roger: Share your experience, expertise and interest with the crew to enhance our fun and progressive culture.
- At this time we are only accepting applicants in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications:
- 15+ years of experience with a substantial portion in a corporate environment, ideally within the technology or finance industries.
- 5+ years of experience in senior legal roles managing legal teams and experience in advising and guiding executive leadership and multiple business groups.
- Experience with international regulations through familiarity with international issues, ensuring compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Crisis management experience with expertise in handling legal crises, managing high-stakes legal disputes, or navigating regulatory investigations.
- Strong data privacy & security expertise with a strong understanding of global data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
- JD from an accredited law school and bar membership in good standing.
- Ability to handle complex legal issues in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional legal research and drafting skills.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Bonus Points For/Preferred Qualifications:
- YARRrrr! The ability to speak like a pirate!
- Certifications including: CIPP/US, CIPM, & CISM.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Compensation - The pay range for this role is $325,000-$350,000 yearly plus a performance based bonus.
- Relocation Bonus - This position can be remote, but we’re also offering a relocation bonus if you move to Jackson Hole, where our corporate headquarters is located.
- Vacation Time - We offer 144 hours of accrued vacation time to start to keep our pirates rested & rejuvenated!
- Paid Holidays - 12 paid holidays per year.
- Paid Sick Time - 80 hours annually.
- Ski Pass and Powder Clause - If you’re in Jackson, you’ll get a season pass to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (or equivalent value in backcountry gear) and the expectation we won’t see you until noon when there’s more than 8” of fresh snow.
- Medical Insurance - 100% covered for Pirates by the company and kicks in the first of the month after enrollment. If you want to add any dependents (spouse, partner or children), they’ll be 50% covered.
- Dental and Vision - 100% covered for Pirates and 50% covered for dependents.
- 401(K) - We offer a Traditional 401(K) and a Roth 401(K), and pirates who contribute 1-3% of their annual salary get matched 100% by the company.
- Parental Leave - Full 12 weeks for parents for the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child.
- Home Office Reimbursement - For our remote folks, we provide a one-time home office reimbursement of up to $1,500 to purchase an ergonomic desk and chair.
- Other Stipends for Remote Individuals - Wifi & snacks, we’ve got y’er back!
