Senior Developer
About Portable
We care about people and the world. We seek out areas of social need and policy failure and make transformational change using research, design and technology. Our clients are as passionate as we are and are working in government agencies, nonprofit organisations and socially-minded businesses.
There are currently 50+ of us working as researchers, strategists, designers, technologists and producers towards our mission from our head office in Collingwood, and remotely from co-working spaces and homes across Australia.
This role sits within our Sweep product team. A small, entrepreneurial group building a product designed to improve workplace fairness. Sweep is gearing up for launch, and this role will be critical in refining the app’s front end and preparing it for real-world testing.
Then there’s you!
A Senior Front-End Developer looking for a role with real ownership and flexibility. You’re open to a 6-month, part-time (0.6 - 0.8FTE, negotiable) contract and you enjoy working in a focused product team where things move quickly. You thrive on crafting intuitive, performant mobile experiences. You care deeply about how people interact with interfaces, and you bring strong expertise in React Native and modern front-end development (ideally with Expo and EAS).
You’re a builder at heart: you enjoy translating designs into polished components, refining animations and interactions, and ensuring the app feels smooth, reliable and accessible across devices. You understand the nuances of mobile environments and you value thoughtful architecture and clean, testable code.
You’re comfortable working in a compact, fast-moving product team where ownership is shared and collaboration is essential.
You'll work closely with designers, QA specialists and the product lead to scope features, problem-solve, and move Sweep towards launch. You're detail-oriented, curious, and motivated by the opportunity to shape a product at a pivotal moment.
We are looking for someone who:
- Brings strong front-end and mobile experience
- Has strong React Native experience and modern front-end skills.
- Has shipped mobile apps and understands animations, error states and data handling.
- Translates designs accurately using tools like Figma.
- Pays close attention to UI/UX detail and quality.
- Works well in a small, fast-moving product team
- Communicates clearly and collaborates across design, dev, QA and product.
- Contributes to technical decisions and feature scoping.
- Delivers high-quality, maintainable code
- Builds clean, reusable React Native components.
- Ensures performance, accessibility and consistency.
- Supports testing cycles, documentation and component libraries.
- Bonus points for:
- Expo, EAS and TestFlight experience.
- Familiarity with design systems or Webflow.
- Interest in AI-powered features.
- Experience with workplace law, pay or employment systems.
An example of what a week at Portable as a Senior Developer might look like:
- Implementing updated branded components in React Native based on new visuals and interaction patterns.
- Refining existing screens and flows to improve clarity, performance and accessibility.
- Pairing with the full-time developer to solve tricky UI or performance issues.
- Reviewing pull requests and helping maintain high-quality code across the product.
- Working with designers and the product lead to plan new features and prepare for testing cycles.
- Preparing builds for internal testing, addressing QA issues, and refining onboarding flows.
- Contributing to documentation, component libraries and release notes.
Here’s how we remunerate and support the experience, growth, and wellbeing of our team:
The salary range for this role is $115,000 to $150,000 plus superannuation (pro-rata) depending on experience. This is a 6-month fixed-term contract, suiting someone part-time (0.6 - 0.8FTE) with flexibility depending on the candidate, and with the possibility of future opportunities within Portable.
Joining Portable means becoming part of an organisation with an award-winning workplace culture, where your contributions are valued and you’re supported.
